What would you like to see on the users pages?
 

Hi folks, a quick Monday question: what would you like to see on both the main users page, and the view profile pages? As you've probably seen, we have a new home page design and new anirec home page design, and are currently figuring out what to put on the new users home page.

Currently, my only ideas are a box that says which users registered today (just like on the main home page of the site), possibly "most recent profile update" (if it includes a bio/avatar update), or maybe something like a random user of the day showcase? The random user of the day would be a person chosen from all of hte users that have an avatar and bio set (so it's never just a blank entry), and it might have some of their info and links to their reviews/recs. Any other ideas you'd like to see if you loaded up that page?

On that same token, how about the view profile page? (example: click here). I'm thinking it needs to be redesigned to be a lot more dynamic, similar to these new home page designs. Things I'm thinking:

-as a user, you'd have the option of entering a homepage, and ALSO a livejournal / myspace page. These would show up in a person's profile

-Have a clear link to the person's save/watched lists, with maybe some "recently added" stats for stuff like that? though people might not care about this

-User favorites. This feature isn't in place yet, but will be very soon. You'll be able to add users as favorites and then various things will be an option. Should basic info about someone's favorites be on this view profile page? Such as "newest favorite activity" or something, which lists the last thing each favorite did? (for example, "sothis - paprika review", "draconpern - added paprika to watched list") I definitely need help figuring out what kind of favorites info people want to see on their profile.

Please, any ideas would be welcome! You can help directly impact what will show up on that page.

Don't know about recently added stats for your watched/saved anime. But everything else is all I would ask for. I particularly can't wait to add my 'top 5 anime' once that function is up. I KNOW! A 'currently watching' list. Something that shows what serieses you're following at the moment.

So you can have your top 5 favourite anime, but also a section that shows maybe up to 5 anime that you're watching at the moment. You can update them if you stop following an anime or if the series is complete. That kind of thing. Thing is, it would be great if the series' name linked automatically to the AniRec (where possible) aswell.

EDIT: I would also LOVE an Anti-rec section. A section that basically says what anime you started watching but dropped, and you have a comment box next to it so you can write why you dropped it. Not a full-on review, but a paragraph max or something. That way, people can see what you like too, see your reasoning, and it's just a matter for your own record.

EDIT 2: Maybe a custom url?

i like all your ideas! the anti recs section could be entertaining. and yes, custom url is on the list... so you'd be able to show people, for example, something like vivisqueen.anime-planet.com or anime-planet.com/vivisqueen/

another idea i have is showing a randomly selected anime for someone on their profile page, out of the ones they haven't seen.

something i've debated doing for years now (people have requested it for that long) is creating some sort of merged anime section for your saved, watched, etc anime. right now we currently have two features on two separate pages: watched and saved anime. what i'm thinking is a different single link (maybe "my anime" instead of "my watched anime" and "my saved anime"). this table would have a few columns, here's what a sample row would look like:

anime name (linked to anirec) - status (saved, watched, watching, dropped) - episodes watched (if applicable and if i decide to do it) - change/delete

rows would be color coded according to status.. for example watched rows might have green text/link color, while red = dropped, etc. there would be filters at the top of hte page to filter by status, so you'd have an easy way of looking up type.

having "watching" as a status could open some doors for the view profile page as well, such as a box which lists 5 randomly selected anime the person is watching.

if this interests people still (as mentioned, this has been passed around for years and im not sure if the interest is gone now) let me know and ill put it on my list of things to do.

note: this feature would never involve catalouging fansubs or versions of a file or anything... solely if you are watching, watched, dropped, saved, and maybe how many eps you've seen.

Sounds good to me.

Could these features be also included in the anime entries (how many people are watching, have watched or have dropped the show)? I know it would be pretty pointless for the short ovas/movies, but shows with 20+ episodes would have some pretty interesting data I think.

Maybe show it just as percentages, not the actual numbers, so that the less well-known shows wouldn't suffer.

I like the idea of the list of what you're watching, have watched, dropped. But not to the detail of every episode like AniDB has.

Not a Myspace user but I can see how some people could want it. Not sure that I would care to link my Livejournal page as I use LJ primarily to keep in touch with some friends.

yeah exactly... sort of anidbish, but not nearly as complicated or complex. the color coding would help make things simple visually, too. the only thing i'm not sure about is how this would show up while looking at anirec entries (would take up a lot of room to do a status/etc o_o maybe clicking "status" would trigger a dropdown just like the screenshots etc buttons do, and that dropdown would have the status options and the # episodes field, and anti-rec comment if you have one)

Well, rec+antirec seems the most functional idea of them all. I think it would be nice to have a list of what a certain person likes and what he/she doesn't.

Personal url link is easy enough to implement and standard enough to be there anyway.

What about Anime genres?
like at anime rec we press "horror anime"
and we see the recommendation's and other stuff?
not only alphabetical!

i swear i need to write up something about genres so i can just cut and paste anytime someone brings it up :)

anime-planet will never have genres (at least, not that i plan on). it it my opinion that by putting genres up, people will choose to not follow certain recommendations because of their bias towards the genre in question. for all the person knows, they might really like a series that is categorized as romance; but they might instead see the recommendation, see the genre tag, and say "pssh, i don't watch such things!"

i'd rather people choose to watch a series based on what's important: the screenshots and what it's about, and maybe a review or two.

that being said, i'm not sure if you've seen the new anirec home page recently but i did add something kind of similar to genres: quick lists. these are lists of specific items/things in anime that people might want to know about (such as vampires, ninja, etc). there's a thread going in general anime discussion to fill ni these lists, if you see something that should be in one of those.

thanks to everyone who responded, and i'd still appreciate more feedback. i'm kind of shocked that there are 215 views and only 25 people voted (all you have to do to vote is check a few boxes!!!) just remember guys, if you don't vote, then i pretty much will just make whatever i want and you'll have had no impact on new features, etc.
