i think the pimmsleur japanese audio tapes are pretty handy if u dont really have time to sit down and read books... i listen to them to uni or to work... and u pick up stuff, you just have to make sure u do go through books later so u understand the grammar ur being taught and the endings being spoken, or just to see what the spelling of the pronounciations are... but u do increase ur vocab and get the jist of constructing a sentence...

if not u can go for the free online stuff like japanesepod101, but i dunno how good they really are at learning japanese systematically....

some programmes I found useful are
Human Japanese and Before You Know it.
Neither is free, both do have a trial version though. Human japanese goes a lot into stroke order and the actual writing and is great for beginners to learn the kanas from. byki is a flash card system that helps with remembering characters and you can download and share lists of cards with others.

Here's a useful firefox extension:

simply move your mouse over kanji characters and the extension explains and translates it for you!

Available languages:
Japanese to English
Japanese to German
Japanese to French
Japanese to Russian

Get it here!
(You need rikaichan and a dictionary - name dictionary is optional)

I'd recommend the Genki , 「げんき」book series which is what I started out with, then you could move on to more advanced litterature. As for a good Kanji dictionary, buy an electronic kanji dictionary "denshi jisho" (the Japanese version, not the English one which isn't nearly as comprehensive), you can find them at amazon.co.jp. They contain loads of useful information, drills etc. If you want a book then "The Kodansha Kanji Learners Dictionary" is a great start.

Though, if you're serious about it, sign up for a Japanese class. You will only get 'so' far by cd's and book's alone.
