Default Japanese History

I'm currently looking into the Bakumatsu ("late Shogunate era") and Boshin Senso and I'm wondering if anyone has any books they can recommend on 19th century Japan?

This is going to be a really obvious answer, but what about Vol.5 of the Cambridge History of Japan (you may find .pdfs of the series on certain websites).

A Modern History of Japan by Andrew Gordon. It's more of a history from Tokugawa to the present but it's definitely a book I enjoyed.

Really? I had that as a uni textbook and found it really dry. It's great if you're enthusiastic about the economics side of things I guess, but it's not great for turning the history into a strong story.

Threads a little old, but..... If your still looking for books about Japan, try these:

"Japan: Its history and Culture" by W. Scott Morton and J. Kenneth Olenik (Good general overview of all Japanese history)

"A Brief History of Chinese and Japanese Civilizations" by Conrad Schirokauer (Covers both China and Japan in-depth from beginning to approx. 1990)

"Japan: From Shogun to Sony" by John R. Robertson (Only goes to 1980, but very knowledgeable)
