Cost of living is higher in Japan. Not sure that the initial numbers provided were accurate, but you need to take more than just the exchange rate in to account.

Not that it matters. This is a silly idea.

Slightly relevant... One of my Japanese friends in Japan wants to become a mangaka after she finishes high school. I was kinda aware of how they have it tough there. And she's really good... From what I saw the only difference between her work and a manga was that one was hand drawn and the other was printed and didn't smudge... Considering how skilled these people are and how little they get paid you know something's wrong.

the reason i say that is that the only American i know that speaks passable japanese ...that is to say he goes to japan on a regular basis and can speak well enough to communicate with little problem...any way ...he was born on okinawa...

Depends also on what she wishes to be mangaka for.
If she'll try to go for the top with some major magazine, or some "smaller one".
Mangakas who do well earn a lot of money, but it is demanding, competitive, and vacations are few and far between, and even those are often used just to get an edge in the work schedule.
It's ambitious, hard work that requires the person in question to be dedicated.

More importantly- it requires skill to make the story and luck for it to be popular enough to pay.

I'm using this site for now: Teach Yourself Japanese

It teaches basic grammar and kana. It's helped out tremendously as a beginner and I downloaded Anki to improve my cognition. But I'm wondering if there's other material out there that'll help?

The guy sounds bitter :P

I understand it's difficult, that's why I've chosen to tackle it. There's no other language I want to learn. I know French slightly, can speak/write it partially and understand it and I picked it up fairly quickly.

I love languages and Japanese presents the kind of challenge a masochistic linguist would relish.
