Anime and Manga tags have had a major upgrade - learn how you can help out

For a few years now, we've had a very robust set of character tags, with new tags being created very regularly. That effort runs smoothly thanks to the tireless efforts of the character moderators, who help author and tweak guidelines regularly, maintain the guidelines, and moderate user submissions that come in for them.

We have a good amount of anime and manga tags, as well. But the effort hasn't run as smoothly, because up until this point, very very few people have had access to adding new tags or adding tags to series.

All of that has officially changed, as for the past few months we've been planning a way to make tagging far more comprehensive and easier for you to help out.

The project and team
-------------------------------
One month ago, a team of moderators was formed to help write comprehensive guidelines for every single anime and manga tag (38 pages' worth of content in a Google Drive document, which we used to help collaborate). We have been working nonstop on this since then, triaging all existing tags, getting rid of some, changing some others, and adding a bunch of new ones. All tag descriptions were written from scratch by the group. We have many additional new tags in mind as well, which we'll work through after this initial launch.

Now, a month later, we have the guidelines 99% completed and already published on the site. We’re finalizing plans for how you can submit changes, to be rolled out within a few hours or days at most.

The tag descriptions
-------------------------------
99% of all descriptions are already written and added to the site, with some that are postponed until after the initial tag-adding sweep occurs. You can find the descriptions in a few locations:

Anime and manga entries

Tooltips will now appear when hovering on any tag (except for the few postponed/pending ones that we have not finalized)

Tag changes, deletions and additions
-------------------------------
The easiest way to see all of the changes is to go through the tag list and read the descriptions. Here’s a general summary of what we’ve done so far:

Deleted tags
  • Dolls
  • Gore
  • Hip Hop
  • Internet
  • Melancholy
  • Omake
  • Random
  • Slow-paced
  • Suspense
  • Token Beach Episode
  • Token Hot Springs Episode
  • Witches

A few of these tags are duplicated (such as Food and also Food and Beverage), or still exist (Gore). This is because we need to first triage these anime and manga to see which alternate tags they should get. Once we're done with that process, some of these tags will change/go away.

Changed tags
  • Terrorists was split off as a character tag. Terrorism was added for anime/manga

  • Explicit Content was split into Explicit Violence and Explicit Sex. If you’ve previously marked ‘explicit content’ as loved or hated, the status was retained for ‘explicit violence’. Change it around if you need to.

  • Young Animators Training Project was renamed to Anime Mirai

  • Shinto was changed to Japanese Mythology

  • Fighting was changed to Hand to Hand Combat (the meaning changed as well; we are triaging currently-tagged titles)

  • Hackers was split off as a character tag. Hacking was added for anime/manga.

New tags / other
  • Tons of Based on [x] tags (based on a light novel, based on a card game, etc), plus Original Work. We are still working through defining all of these and coming up with rules on how to tag franchises. These will be fully in place before Winter 2014 season, so the charts will be more helpful for you.

  • Many new food-based tags, such as Culinary School, Food and Beverage, Cooking, and Restaurant and Cafe setting tags.

  • More tags to go along with Otaku Culture: Anime Industry, Manga Industry, Doujinshi

  • New manga tags: Hiatus, Cancelled, Rushed Ending, Harlequin, etc

  • Sci-fi based tags like Virtual Reality, RPG, MMORPG, Time Travel, the return of Dystopia, etc.

  • A bunch of new ‘trigger’ tags that serve as content warnings. All are heavy/intense tags: Sexual Abuse, Emotional Abuse, Physical Abuse, Bullying, Animal Abuse

  • Better guidelines for Gender Bender, plus a new Crossdressing tag

  • Re-categorization of the Survival tag, plus addition of Play or Die (closely related to High Stakes Games)

  • Made a decision on keeping both Yaoi/Yuri *and* Shounen-ai/Shoujo-ai, plus wrote guidelines on when to use both

  • Other randoms like Deal with the Devil, Work Life, Combining Mecha, Coming of Age, Mysterious Shop

Postponed tags
We couldn’t come up with solid guidelines for the following tags, and will work on them next. Most of these are the 1% of tags that do not have descriptions posted on the site.

  • Violence (not explicit violence, just ‘violence’)
  • Incest
  • Smut
  • Futuristic
  • Demographic tags (shounen, shoujo, josei, seinen)
  • Science
  • Moe
  • Magic School, Military School, other ‘School’ types
  • Some sort of ‘light fanservice’ or ‘light ecchi’ tag, for types like TTGL/others that don’t fit ‘Ecchi’
  • Family Friendly
  • Panty Shots

How you can help
-------------------------------
Very soon, we’ll start posting threads with batches of tags that we’d love your help with, followed by a more permanent announcement/plan in the near future for submitting ANY tag changes for any anime or manga. The reason we aren’t opening the floodgates for ALL user submissions at once is because:

  1. We need to get a sense of how many people plan to submit changes, and/or any other issues that come up, as we figure out the best way to tackle user submissions for the long term

  2. The moderators are currently going through and adding/changing tags for anything they’re familiar with, to get some of the up-front work out of the way. We’d like to work on many of the tags with you all in tandem, and once the moderators have completed their initial sweep, we’ll allow submissions for all tags.

The location of those threads is TBD in the next day or two, we’ll post announcements when each new thread or set of threads is ready for your input.

Future plans
-------------------------------
Sometime soon we’ll announce some initial batches of tags we’d love help with, which will include guidelines on what we’re looking for with submitted data. After going through that process, we’ll launch a permanent system for accepting user submissions for tags, including tags you think we should add to the tag database, etc.

Also, tags are coming soon to the anime and manga tooltips, including the seasonal charts.

Project thanks and kudos

The project team and founding moderators are (in alphabetical order):

Aranneas
chii
CommanderKarasu
sothis
ZetsubouKaiji

If you have a minute, please stop by their profiles and give a shoutout or a thanks (no need to thank me, ofc :) ). The group put in an incredible amount of time and effort to get this done, and will also help moderate your submissions and help train new moderators as well.

Xesxen also put in a ton of work for the back end code changes needed to allow easier tagging, upgrades for the tooltips, etc.

We also had a few other folks who helped out briefly at the beginning, my thanks to them as well:
Damias
Grospoliner
Taekwondoin
vernanonix

We hope you enjoy the new tagging feature, and stay tuned for more information in the announcements for how you can start to help out!

Sorry I feel off on the project, but you know how real life can get Congrats on getting through most of it though!:drinking:

Little note (not sure if already mentioned), when you check out the tag page you see the love mark twice (Name, love, love at the top of the page). The second one is supposed to be the dislike/hate/broken heart

Indeed, unrelated to the launch though (bug has been around for awhile)
