Evangelion 3.0 – you can (not) unwatch
And the funny thing is that I watched it for the second time… after month or two after that shitty release. Anyway. Even if is better looking, it doesn’t help the facts that it’s still horrible as it gets. I could probably get into details and end up writing a book how everything that happened was horrible and insulting to the fans or original concept… but I’ll keep it simple.
First thing that had me trippin’ was 14 years time skip. I didn’t even mind it, heck, I thought it was cool. I even read a few fanfics that went down that road and thought they were ok… ish… and seeing it happen in this actually got me captivated… for a minute or so, at least until I realized how horrible it was executed. From that point, nothing, and I mean nothing, makes absolute sense whatsoever. Not in “evangelion” sense because of complexity and complex writing, it doesn’t make any sense because of shitty writing… horrible, horrible writing.
When that first part escalated I started to wonder if Anno got that same George Lucas syndrome, when mighty fall so low and just write crap they don’t care much about, besides maybe milking it for some money.
Anyway. Back to the plot. We are introduced into new setting where we see a bunch of old characters whose behavior has nothing to do with logic. Everything that happened in 2.0 was ignored and everyone personified their faults, problems and what not into my favorite angst piñata, you know the guy, Shinji Angstsaurus Ikari. And boy… was that made just for the sake of it or what? Yes, it was made like that so the original feel would stay intact and give fans their dose of everything they remember in original. In other words, it’s a clever trick that would be clever if it wasn’t for a fact that it was written terribly and barely excused by anything. Even the planning felt horrible.
The reason I watch rebuild is because I loved the original characters and wanted to see them get more attention or maybe more love, something that manga did way better. And yes, I even loved Shinji. No. Wait. I especially loved Shinji. And when I heard that there will be more to Shinji and Kaworu interactions in this movie, I was really, really pumped for this (even though I’m asukafag, and slightly a reitard). Needless to say that I was disappointed in every way possible. Instead of focusing on characters we love, we got some new idiots, combined with older character that became idiots, and that… that… that moving fanservice bitch with glasses we call Mari. I was tricked that this was about plot or some sort of contribution to the original universe, but as it is now, it’s nothing more than yuri/yaoi fanservice for… I don’t even know who… I didn’t see a single person that liked this so far…
The plot is bad. There are immense plot holes no one will bother to explain, but will rather rely on older formula of being too deep and expecting it to be overlooked. It doesn’t work that way, Anno. It doesn’t. There was no substance, barely any subplot, any connection, logic, information… nothing for fuck sake. If there was symbolism in this, I didn’t notice it, and probably won’t even bother looking it up. My interest in rebuild is gone, but I wouldn’t mind getting bluerays of original series, or EoE. That would be more than welcome.
All in all, it was terrible. There are some scenes that will make you cringe, some are so bad that I was laughing… characters were shallow, there was no development whatsoever and interactions were so god awful that I was wondering if Anno even wrote this. As a fanboy of original series I’d give it a 0.5/5, but I’ll give it a solid 2/5 just for the sake of esthetics… I would highly recommend skipping this one and rebuild in general… it would be so much better if the end of the world actually happened at the end of 2.0…
