New policies for synopses (anime and manga databases)

Hi everyone,

Repeating this part again, last month, Anime-Planet reached almost a million unique users a month. This is 50% more users than we had post V4 launch.

With a bigger userbase comes more responsibility that we make our databases as complete as possible, so that everyone can create lists, mark characters, and use A-P as their primary resource. For this reason, over the next week we'll be rolling out some big changes to how information is added and moderated on the site. These are initial steps and we will continue to refine the process moving forward.

After announcing a change to our character database policies yesterday, today we're announcing a big change for the anime and manga databases.

Synopses will be added asap for ALL entries

In the past, we've waited to add synopses until we can write one from scratch, as our goal is that Anime-Planet has the most reliable database for looking up information about a series. We used to have a small team of writers (site reviewers) that helped get a decent chunk of these up every few weeks, but the team has since disbanded.

Our goal is still that eventually, we'll replace all synopses on Anime-Planet with custom-written ones. For now, we acknowledge your concerns that the database isn't as complete without a synopsis and some tags, so starting today, we'll start to fill in placeholder synopses from reputable other sources (such as the R1 licensors) for all anime and manga.

How about hand-written synops?

For the past month or so, we've also been working on training some moderators to run a user-submitted synopsis project. This will take some time to settle out and put into place, expect an announcement sometime in the future about that.

Help out by submitting tag changes!

We'll also add some basic tags to each series based on the placeholder synopses, but in the meantime, you can help out by submitting tag additions or changes in our tag forum.

As one final heads up, the Recently Added Anime page is updated not only when we add new entries, but also when a synopsis is filled in (if it was blank before). This means that until we sweep the anime database, this page might become somewhat useless (as it'll have hundreds of titles that we are adding placeholder synopses to). Thanks in advance for your patience as we do the initial sweep.

Yippee!

I really wanted to be able to suggest a synopsis for all those manga entries on the database...

It took longer than anticipated to do, but the anime database is now fully filled in (As much as possible) with placeholder synopses. Any that still don't have a synopsis are because it's not possible to get one, so we'll work to prioritize filling those in. We're still working on a training effort to be able to get more community-sourced descriptions added.

The manga database is critically understaffed at the moment but we're working to get a few more people added to start fixing up the old entries (adding synops, replacing big images, etc) and will start with the top-rated titles on the site to prioritize.
