What is great about the series, is that it follows the development of the characters, each season almost as long as a half a year in their life.
By the end you really feel like you got a glimse of real life. Well as real as it can get with a comical cast like this one.
I feel like although the animation has dated a bit, it still is decent enough to portray the story, and as it goes along it just gets better.

I think it is one of the few Rumiko Takahasi works that ends with a satisfying feeling.
Always on my top 10 list. at tiems in my top 5.

This is indeed a good anime. After hitting the last couple arc, it's incredible in terms of character development.

I can't think of many other of her works that...
actually has the male and female lead not only acknowledge their relationship, but to come full circle with a marriage.
I'd say it's her best romantic work.

Also has a male lead that is one of the very few I would want to exchange places with. ;)

Ranma 1/2 is probably a close second. But Maison Ikkoku is indeed my favorite anime of all time. It beat out my previous favorite please teacher[onegai teacher] quite easily.

I would have never guessed with your name =)
lol Yeah Ranma 1/2 is my second fave of hers , followed by Urusei Yatsura. I imagine Inuyasha might come next, but I always dug her Mermaid Scar and Forest.

So, I've been reading the manga and it's got me wanting to watch the anime again. Is there anyone who would like to watch it along with me and discuss it along the way?

Thought I'd see if there were any takers before I dug out my box sets.

Soon after seeing if there's any takers on my offer. I'm thinking maybe 4 episodes or so a day? Maybe less?

I'm also willing to tell those interested but lacking access to the show where to find it online (through PM, better than youtube) since it's been OOP for years now and the DVDs fetch collector prices.

Alright, I'm going to be watching this again starting tomorrow night.

that would be tonight right? Some of my series is packed up,Season 2 -3but I know where to see it as needed, I can also still get to season 1 box set, started showing it to my gal a while back, but we got sidetracked on Kalieco Star. So I am looking forward to starting it back up.

Manga to anime comparison, episodes 1-4.
The differences between the anime and manga are small but so far I feel it makes the anime better. Episode 1 follows chapter one pretty closely with exception of the anime opening with Kyoko arriving to town in the box truck. Episode 2 though squeezes chapters 2 & 3 together. Which works since a whole episode devoted to why Soichiro (the dog) has his name would have been lacking. In Episode 3, which follows chapter 4, when Kyoko and Godai get up into the attic of Maison Ikkoku they discover writing on the wall that reveals some of Maison Ikkoku's history. Part of which was lovers torn apart because of the war (WWII) is an addition in the anime. Finally in Episode 4 that follows chapter 5 there's a repeat of Kyoko cheering on Godai each morning as he sets off to take a different test each day and scenes of the gang taking bets on which, if not all, of those tests he will fail that's added.
I can't really recommend watching the dub of Maison Ikkoku yet. It's pretty rough in my opinion. The translation of certain jokes is lost as they try to stay in sync with the lip flaps and the cast is just... off. But then again I've never listened to it completely. So I'm doing just that this time around on top of watching the sub. It has improved slightly in these first 4 episodes, I think. Or I'm just getting to the point I don't mind it as much as before.

The reason the dub was odd, was the pauses between speech sounded jerky. It is hard to do zany in English I have come to the conclusion. Godai drunk sounded ok, but him getting mad at everyone in his room, just did not work.

I love the cast as a whole. Each one of them have major flaws. The fact that Godai gets picked on is kinda hilarious. Yotsuya reads porn and eyes ladies, Hanae is an embarrassment to her son, and hell his father is never around (well I guess he is working a lot)
and the other gal walks around without a shred of decency.

I have never tried to compare the manga to the anime, but I do recall the incident at the beach with the Tennis instructor happening a lot quicker in the manga than the anime.

I love the
part where he sweeps her off her feet more in the anime, it is in motion, and more fun.

Oh yeah, Hanae plays the instigator more than anyone else as well.

I'm finding that little scenes here and there are added, I think, to fill out the run time for an episode. But it never feels like that. It either adds to the story or entertainment value of the series as a whole. Also, the transitions from scene to scene are much smoother than in the manga.

On a side note, earlier tonight it occurred to me that Takahashi has a habit of making her leading women the jealous type. Lum, Kyoko, Akane and even Kagome all get jealous, each in their own way. Lum being the most dangerous of course. Kyoko though, hides it the most, or tries to.

Speaking of lighting induced pain,
the first time Kyoko slaps Godai, in the anime, lighting flashes in the background as she raises her hand.
Not sure if that was a nod to UY or not, but it felt like it.

OMG I never noticed that.
with the lightning. lol I wonder if that is used in ranma too

Episodes 5-8 anime/manga comparison.
Episode 5 following chapter 6 has Godai at Sakamoto's place waking up to the face of his grandmother from a dream of Kyoko giving him a new pair of underwear at the beginning. Then, later at the pachinko parlor, he hits the jackpot and ends up buying Sakamoto and himself bar-b-q with the winnings instead of a new pair of underwear. Sakamoto guilts him into it for Godai staying at his place. This leads to Godai making an excursion to Maison Ikkoku to try and sneak a pair of his underwear from his room without being seen by Kyoko. He later stops at a laundry mat next to a public bath to wash his underwear. He's caught not wearing underwear under his clothes while there. Which at the end of the episode the added joke is the result of him wrestling over a pair of his underwear with Soichiro. Also, the celebration for him making it in to a college takes place in his room rather than at Chachamaru.

Episode 6 following chapter 7 starts with Godai waking from a daydream in class screaming to be left alone since he has an entrance exam tomorrow. Seems some habits are hard to break. The following scene has Godai and his friends at coffee shop talking about he's spaced out and he ends up talking how he hasn' goten any sleep because of his manager. Dreams of wanting to hld her hand seems to keep him up a night. Poor boy has it bad for her. After which the episode picks up where the manga starts with the last addition being the walk down the path with Soichiro being longer. The big reveal of who Soichiro, the man, was, is much more striking in the anime as well.

Episode 7 following chapter 8 the first difference is in Godai's nightmare when Kyoko embraces the picture of Soichiro that Godai imagines Kyoko is in a dress instead of being stark naked. No big deal, probably for the best, can't be having naughty bits all out there, well, unless you're Akemi I guess. Later at the coffee shop Godai's friends get him so upset he grabs the ticket and they thank him for the treat. Everyone takes advantage of the poor guy, then again he doesn't put up that much resistance, makes a lot of noise but never does anything about it. Cut to him thinking about getting a part time job in his room when in slips Yotsuya to torment him about what Soichiro must have been like.

Episode 8 follows chapter 9 with the exception of the start which shows how and why Godai was drunk the night he professed his love for Kyoko to all the neighborhood. There's also some playful chibi characterizations of Kyoko and Godai as Godai tries to imagine what he must have did the previous night. Things could go much smoother for our guy if his tormentors didn't use him as a play thing. It's for the best though, Maison Ikkoku thrives on simple misunderstandings being taken over the top.

Going from there to the crazy driving. I did not realize that was in both the manga and the anime. It really shows how few people do not even have a drivers license... or at least this was the case in the 80's.

What Japanese car was in the episode.

Um I am a blur. I think it is Ep 10 where the study session happens.
I think that takahashi is quite simply the BEST at making the "Boy Likes girl, Other girl likes boy who likes girl, and Little boy likes young girl who likes boy who likes main gal."

I am not sure it has a name, but it is like the merry go round romance. It happens in Lum as well. Where Aturo likes the girl who likes the boy who likes Lum who likes Aturo. She is like the master at making a tangled web

Love the next episode showing Kyoko is
obviously steamed about Godai out with that other gal. What you were talking about with the whole jealousy that crops up in all takahasi stories

So, as I was watching episodes 9-12 I realized if I tried to point out all the additions and such from manga to anime I end up having enough information for a small book or something. SO I'm just going to stick to talking about the show instead with a google doc listing the corresponding anime episode to manga chapters.

I'm not sure if Mitaka's car is anything in particular. It looks like an old Nissan Skyline in spots and an old Toyota Cressida in others.

It's episode 11, and you forgot the "[/spoiler]" at the end there.

But yeah, Takahashi makes drawing up a love connection diagram on paper a bitch. After thinking about it she also seems to make all her male leads indecisive. Then again, she has openly admitted in interviews she has trouble bringing couples together in a timely fashion.

Episode 10
I love how Mitaka is deathly afraid of dogs. Serves that bastard right. I guess feel like I can connect with Godai more than Mitaka. Every time Mitaka tosses that sparkling smile out the words "that motherfucker" escape from my mouth. But I just noticed something, from playing the episode in fast forward, where Godai and Mitaka go back and forth talking about their advantages over each other before they leave for the beach. Kyoko is standing between them on the side line and she looks back and forth at them, its like a tennis match as she looks left and right. Which would be unfair for poor Godai. Also, the bit where Yotsuya gets left behind cracks me up every time, he's like the odd kid out in dodge ball or something.
Episode 11
With the added bits it at the beginning it made the episode feel much more focused on Kentaro. Well, that's obviously what they were aiming for with his name being in he episode title. But yeah, Takahashi spins an intricate web of love, yet it's never confusing.
Episode 12
The tension of Kyoko's jealousy from seeing Kozue on Godai's arm is intensified so much in the anime. You also get a sense of Kozue trying to send a message to Kyoko too, "this man is mine, if you want him you better come after him like I am." Ah, but the end with Mitaka cowering on the ground with Soichiro on top him is gold.

Well I can't seem to get used to Kyoko's dub voice. At times it seems to work, but most of the time she just sounds too old or something. It reminds me of when you hear a cute voice over the drive-thru intercom, but when you get to the window... well it doesn't match. But it's backwards here, pretty woman on screen but I'm not too interested to see actual face behind the voice.
