Re: Fun in Japan

Achieving drunkness on a budget: Go to an all-you-can-drink/eat place that falls within 2000-2500 yen for say 1.5hrs, then focus on shochu (JP equivalent of vodka, made from rice/wheat/sweet...

Re: Trip to Japan - any help is welcome

Well, I just got back from my Nikko trip. :) I used my US passport to get the World Heritage Pass (World Heritage Pass [TOBU RAILWAY] (http://www.tobu.co.jp/foreign/pass/w_heritage_pass.html)). You...

Re: Trip to Japan - any help is welcome

This is too vague. Totally depends on the flight path, types of activities planned, duration of stay, and other variables. Start putting together a plan like Freakzilla did, then you'll come across...

Re: Trip to Japan - any help is welcome

Transportation:
The railpass is only for JR. City/private lines (which include subway lines) do not fall under JR. In cities like Kyoto and Hiroshima, transportation is dominated by non-JR...

Re: Japan?

Check out the Boston Career Fair since you're in the US to gain a sense of what kind of headhunting's going on these days. That's where JP companies do most of their hiring. I've had a (gaijin IT)...

Re: Trip to Japan - any help is welcome

Never been to Nikko outside of a school trip, sorry. It's actually one of the places I'm planning to check out before I move to the US in July this year, so I can get back to you about it later if...

Re: Tasukete kudasai! (language help)

Daijoubu is more informal and is a more general way of asking if someone is all right. Buji is used more often after an accident, a crisis, etc.

You're probably thinking of kachou (家長) or...

Re: Trip to Japan - any help is welcome

Ah, I was thinking about suggesting that you not actually shop in places like Shinjuku/Shibuya (I get tired just getting myself out of the station), but yes, parks are good breathers. Although, you...

Re: Trip to Japan - any help is welcome

One of my duties at my old job included taking visiting US teachers around Tokyo. I've also taken quite a few visiting friends around town over the years. From my experience, I have the following...

Re: wtf is up w/ KFC????

Some posts have been edited to remove links to GIFs that had little to do with KFC references in Japanese manga/anime in image-only posts. They did not add to the discussion at hand and may be...

Re: 何と言ういみですか What does it mean?

He says, "kocchi mo agari da."

I'm not trying to discourage you, but I think you need to rack up some more hearing practice miles before tackling anime--while VAs do enunciate somewhat clearly...

Re: 何と言ういみですか What does it mean?

What he says is actually "Agatta zo."

agaru (http://dictionary.www.infoseek.co.jp/?spa=&sc=1&se=on&lp=0&gr=ml&qt=%A4%A2%A4%AC%A4%EB&sm=1&sv=KO)

In this context, the definition is the 12th one...

Re: Learning Kanji

If you give me a screenshot (with whatever private information you would not like me to know blotted out ;)) of the appropriate settings page, I can point you to the right setting.

Re: reasons for kanji?

We can read a lot faster when we have kanji to help parse the words instead of just unbroken stretches of hiragana/katakana.

Re: What's the meaning of this symbol?

It's called an aiai-gasa (相合い傘). It's a doodle used to symbolize couples (sharing an umbrella). If drawn by someone else, it's usually to poke fun at the pair for acting like a couple, regardless...

Re: Suffix question - professors

That's strange. I've never heard of that one. But it led me to ask around to poll opinions in case I've had it wrong, and it ranged from "I think you can call them both ways and no noe cares", "It...

Re: Japanese culture

Unless you've been living/working here for a while, you will still tend to get a lot of leeway, and even more so if you don't look Japanese/Asian. It's a rather superficial way of determining...

Re: Suffix question - professors

I don't think you could go wrong with -kyouju. It's more respectful than -sensei, and they will always tell you "<insert whatever they prefer> de ii yo" or something if they're uncomfortable.

Re: Useful phrases to use in Japan!

Well, that doesn't actually answer the question. ^^;

If someone asks you what food you like (suki na tabemono wa nandesuka, etc.), I would recommend saying "(watashi wa) <insert food item(s)...
