Advanced Anime Search (by plot points) -- ideas?

hi, i suggest adding a recommendation by summary of the anime. Prime example, Im searching for animes that have a little brother and older sister, and I cant find recommendations for something like that. by the way im going to ask in the anime part.

as far as the database as it is now, it's based on people logging in, choosing a single series, then choosing another series they think people will like, for a variety of reasons.

your idea has sparked an interest in something else i could add, though... a super search for anime, but one that isn't necessarily genre based.

i haven't wanted to do genres at all, that's why you don't see them... i'd rather people read recommendations with a non biased mind, in case they don't like a certain genre, etc.

but maybe it might be fun to have some sort of anime search for plot points, as opposed to just genre. so, for example:

you might click "Anime search", and have a list of checkboxes. you'd choose things like:

Mecha, Animals, Fairies, Magic/Spells, chibi characters, etc.

You'd select which ones you want, and it would show you the closest matches. i don't think this should be genre based. for example, you shouldn't be able to search for shoujo, since i don't like genres and other sites do this already. instead, it would be based solely on plot points or THINGS in the anime.

this would be difficult to gather information for, so i'd first need to figure out if people can help submit this info. it shouldnt be as hard as submitting descriptions or screenshots, you'd just tell me a list of things that are in each series.

i'd also have to design the algorithm to search o_O which would be hard i think, but maybe cwolves or other folks could help :D

what do you guys think? i'll make this a global announce[/i]

i just wanted to clear this up, though... babybro, what you are asking wouldn't necessarily work like the existing rec database. right now, people log in and make votes. what i'm talking about would be finding series that have that stuff in it, period... then it would be up to you to decide if you want to watch it (there would be no comments from people, etc).

of course, if someone has reviewed the entry, you could read that to see if people like it.

You might make submissions in the same way one would make a search, by checking boxes. To avoid unaccurate descriptions made in a hurry, just the terms that were voted more than once would make it into the database. You could also make submitable keywords that could be searched for (that would be a bit closer to what babybro is expecting).

Anyways, this kind of info sounds a lot easier to submit, so count me in!

i think i'd rather have it fit into predefined categories than keywords. if someone really wants to search via a certain keyword, they could let me know, and i could add a field for it. i could even make posts in gen anime occasionally saying something like "List all series that have an important older sister", people could respond, and could discuss if its correct or not. i feel this is way more important than allowing people to auto submit, for sure. this database has always been based on quality and doublechecking, and i'd want to physically see whats happening before it's live.

maybe i could even make a subsection in one of the forums dedicated to these keywords threads, so they could be added to eventually. it just depends if people would read this ;)

maybe you could make the reasons searchible?

like a search of the words big brother or little brother migt show up all the reasons that have those words in them and then people can work of their

Maybe this helps..

Here is how I search for an anime i want to watch next:
1. Which type of anime (e.g. mecha) ?
2. Which series of this type did I see and like (e.g. FMP) ?
3. AniRec for this series (or several series)
4. Any interesting series in the list (starting from the top) (e.g. Gunparade because I've already seen Vandread & Nadesico)
5. Look it up on AniDB & AnimeNfo for some additional comments.

Ack... I had a big post for this, and obviously never sent it. Basically said that most traditional film genres don't do a very good job of describing anime, and the current hybrids that anidb and ANN have are a poor solution. So, if you were going to categorise anirec, I'd suggest rather than having "action, drama... shounen... mecha" you draw up something closer to a 'content' list, and use that. Certainly being able to click on 'harem' as a topic, and memorise the animes as not-to-watch would help me.
