Default keep topics unread until you view them? poll, and respond

there's a hack i could install which would make it so topics appear unread (the orange icon) until you view them.. regardless of the connection dying or leaving the site.

i've thought about adding it, but want a consensus first.. would you find this helpful? please vote AND respond with a reasoning

Yes Sothis, this is something that I would really want. It happens almost every day that I have to log off suddenly and all the posts get marked read. It's time consuming to go through the stuff again next time to see if you missed something important/interesting. And another annoying thing is when you're away from your computer for a while and have left yourself logged in at the forum. And when you come back you've been logged out from it and again all topics have been marked read.

That's about all what I have to say on the subject.

It would be useful, but it would cause a problem on the other side: it would be harder to find what *really* is new and what you just didn't read because you didn't want to...

There's always the possibility to use the "Mark all topics read" thing. That way you'd fix that problem!

If you haven't noticed this feature, it is on every forum page, on the right side above all the threads. I use this function often when I need to mark several threads I'm not interested in as read.

zdragon: thats actually the main reason why i didnt install it... maybe i dont WANT to read certain topics, but they'd always stay unread..

I say go for it, I always wondered why on occation all topics would be marked read randomly (I never logout, just change which computer I read from) tho admittedly it is only a minor inconvenience.

I live by the "Mark all topics read" link. After I've read over all the topics I want to read I just click that and minimise the browser. When I check again refresh and repeat.

it'd help not noticing a post in the new release forum, i know i'm not the only one to have done that. and besides, even if you dont want to read a topic, it's not as if it sticks it up at the top of the list in your face or anything.

i dont think the hack has a feature to only apply it to certain forums... it would be all or nothing
