It actually is showing the total number of different types of users: Registered, Hidden and Guest

Registered users are of course normal users.... guests would be people who are browsing the site but aren't logged in to the system.

Hidden would refer to any user who has "Hide Online Status" set to "Yes" in their Profile. So it wouldn't show their name, but would indicate that someone was logged into the system but "hidden"

yea, you can choose to be hidden too by doing what freakzilla mentioned..

though *i* can always see everyone, hidden or not >=)
