Information about licencing in the Anime Recommendation DB

I suggested to Sothis that we could add some info about whether an anime listed in the recommendation section is licenced or not. She didnt turn the idea down immidiatly, but requested I made a poll in here. Then she could decide based upon the feedback from the users.

My suggestion is based on adding the following information to each series:

- Licenced: yes/no
- Licenced to studio
- Licenced year

And if possible - also add a link to a store where you can purchase the DVDs.

This would give the recommendation database some advantages:

1: it would make it seem more legitimate for the studios
2: it might even make it more interesting for other
sites to refer to the recommendation datbase
3: heck - it might even turn the recommendation database
into some kind of portal for people interested in
purchasing the DVDs for a serie - or similar series.

So what do you say?

i think it'S a great idea to show if sth is licenced or not... but putting links to stores up there and keeping them updated? whew, that would be way too much work i think... people should be able to look for stores themselves... it isn't that hard

my main issue with listing stores, is that i wont get shit for it. if im advertising a store, i should be getting paid for it (to pay for server costs, etc). so theres basically no way id do that. the site isnt big enough yet for sites to even consider doing so, anyways.

I don't think it really contributed anything to the recc DB unless you want to expand it to be more general information about the series and reccomendations. wasn't there some kind of animeinfo partnership or something? what happened to those links? That just seems like the kind of information that they should be having.

I think adding info about licensed or not (and to what studio) isn't bad at all, but links to DVD-stores shouldn't be added because of the following 2 reasons:
1.Advertisements should be paid (by the stores)
2.Because it's a lotta work to keep them updated

Whatever, if somebody wnats to get the DVD of a licensed series he has only to search the net.
But all in all a good idea

Yes, it's a great idea. But let's not go too far. Studio and release year would be great. To be able to search with Ghibli or Production I.G, could come in handy. But I agree with the general opinion on advertising, stores should pay for it.

i am absolutely not affliated with animenfo. but there are anidb links.. however they dont list this certain thing.

Sure, info about wheter it's licenced or not sounds interresting.

Dont think we should have links to stores and such tho. In this case i'd suggest that someone simply makes a list with well known dvd stores like amazon, rightstuf, bestbuy dvdboxoffice etc.

With adding purchasing information... Don't most licensers provide links to stores to purchase the DVDs, or outright sell it on their website?

If it's wanted (which the poll says is otherwise), wouldn't it be easier to link to the licenser's site than to a store like animenation?

Though, it would depend on whether you were going to post links to a store, or to each individual item...

Too much work, at any rate.

i think im going to use my moderator veto powers and say no to this one...

i spoke with exp about this (he owns anidb), and he mentioned how this was something that was requested for his site, and he said no.. the reasoning being, its never a good thing to admit you know series are licensed, considering the nature of the site. i think this is applicable here as well. namely, primarily, because of the "new releases" forum. even though new releases is registered to view, there isnt much stopping a representative of a company to find out that this site is posting links to fansubs for licensed anime.. even if the chance is remote, i dont know if i want to risk any sort of legal problems, or, having to drastically change the site because of such things.

so, yea. unless someone gives me a viable solution to this, i think im going to go the route that exp went and scrap the idea.
