Not sure if this was already here,
why is it so important to take your shoes off at the front door that you'd do it even if you were running into a burning building!? (as seen in Yuyu Hakusho) anybody know?

Osaka:
Miss Yukari. Yukari: Huh? What is it, Osaka? Osaka: I've got a question. Yukari: Oh, wow. I guess when the tests roll around, even Osaka has interest in studying. All right, ask me anything. Osaka: Well, in America... Yukari: Yeah. Osaka: Like with American homes... Yukari: Yeah? Osaka: You can go inside with your shoes on? Yukari: Yeah. Osaka: Okay, so, what if you... ...you stepped in dog poop like out there on the street, Yukari: Ugh.. Osaka: ...and you just went on home without realizin' it... Yukari: Ughhh.. Osaka: And on top of that, if the American father and mother and eldest son and eldest daughter all stepped on poop and xxx and they went all home without realizin' it...

could be something to do with taking sandals off is easier than cleaning them ...anda lot of roads where dirt or mud in the old days...and of course in those days the road was shared with all sorts of cows, horses and pigs etc....

Historically, I'm under the impression that it's so you don't ruin the tatami. Nowadays, with many homes and buildings having modern flooring, it's something of a cultural artefact.
