I guess it's kinda geeky but meeeh.....

in Jigoku Shoujou anime (hell girl), Ai always talked to her 'grandmother', who sometimes appeared as a large red spider with 3 eye-like structures on its back arranged like a triangle, inside a web.

Nowadays, while i watch vampire knight-guilty, i came across the same spider - Big, red, 3 eyes on the back ect

QUESTION IS:
significance of such a spider? and what does it sympolize?

First off the spider portrayed is a Black Widow, it venom is extremely dangerous and sometimes it can be lethal.

I went a did some digging on tvtropes to see if they had any thing similar.
Coming up first was Black Widow

Usually, a Black Widow is a cross between a Con Artist and a Serial Killer, a woman who seduces, marries, and then murders men for their money, always using a different name and identity each time to keep the police and her intended victims from twigging to her real identity. She's very much the Femme Fatale or The Vamp.

Nothing really seemed to jump out at me untill following the links to the Kiss of Death and The Vamp linked in the Black Widow page.

The spider could be symbolizing death (Kiss of Death/ The Vamp)?
I can kinda see how they could be related to the Vampire knight but nothing definite. I can't say the same for Hell Girl having never watch it.

Also it could just be something that's merely a coincidence. I don't recall seeing the Black Widow in other similarly themed shows.

well that's my take on it :)
oh ya black widows scare me crazy! I had several of them crawling on me time after time when I have had to clean out my grandmothers basement. (ya ya I know there are more dangerous spiders I can and probably come across)

I thought it'd be a black widow, but having seen no red triangles only eyes, i hesitated in making a reference xD

of course, it maybe just a coincidence, however the spider having an important role in the plot of hell girl sparked my interest once i saw it again :/ lol

I don't hate spiders, maybe consider having a pet tarantula some time xD but ya, they are a real pain! Found a huge 5-10cm spider lurking behind an old bookcase once :s
