Read The Kanji

just found this and it's totally awesome - you can get quizzed on your JLPT level and see stats for what you've missed/gotten so far, etc.

free to use.

That's very neat.

Amusingly, the 2nd kanji it popped up for me was 平仮名 and where they normally have the English word equivalent of the Japanese word, it just read "hiragana."

I found this site somehow. It's pretty cool way to start. It's got an easy going story that goes about a westerner going to japan and then meeting peeps and mac'n on chicks.

Japanese Lessons | NHK WORLD Online

What stood out most about this is that it's easy to follow, low amount of content per lesson (easy to assimilate) and the content itself if very useful. Most of this stuff you will use if you go to japan.

P.S. EVERYONE should listen this before starting to learn japanese. It gives a very nice overview of the japanese language and lots of info on japan itself related with the language.

Well as good recommentation to learn japanese from book is "Takako Karppinen - Japanin Kielen Alkeet" book for Finnish people. Costs about 30 euros and has CD available too if you might need it.

Books on grammar only get you so far, especially since there isn't much grammar in Japanese. It's all replaced by special words, so you need a huge dictionary with many examples. The free ones on the internet aren't. Buy one of those small computers.

(actually Eijiro is pretty good, but only for certain questions)

As for memorizing all that, I haven't found a way yet ^^; I tested flash card software but lack the discipline.

Agreed on the books, grammar and flash card lol

I still haven't looked at the books I bought 2-3 yrs ago. Got flash cards this year but they're still in the box.

I haven't heard of Eijiro, what is it exactly? Don't have jp fonts at this place.

Thought I would throw up what I've been using as my beginning of learning Japanese (focusing on Kana atm).

The follow are all part of Smart.fm and use the iKnow web 'game/application' which is just excellent. Recommend any beginner signs up for the site, get a few 'lists' added and starting playing around (its free).

A few lists (they look just like lists if you follow the link but when signed in you can go to 'Start > iKnow' in the top right)
Hiragana - All the Hiragana, pronunciation and sample drawing techniques.
Katakana - All the Katakana, pronunciation, and sample drawing techniques.
Essential Japanese Adjectives
Essential Japanese Verbs

There are lots more on there but those were the ones I focused on 1st (well still working on :P)

Also if you don't mind spending some money the Kana & Kanji flash cards from White Rabbit Press are great, good quality and very imformative cards. They are also availble from Amazon. As someone pointed out in the review of them the only downside is the Kana cards sometimes use Americanised examples for pronunciation which can be confusing but if you know the basics shouldn't be a problem.

250 Mannin no Kanken & Tadashii Kanji Kakitori-kun - Kanken Taisaku are 2 DS games that can help with Kanji - if anything they are a bit different and something to do to kill time on the bus/train.

Hmmm what else is there, I've uploaded the best Kana tables (as images) I could find: Higarana & Katakana

Tofugu has made a couple of cheat sheets for Beginners aswell:
