Was just thinking of some manga that was done based on an anime. I like them because almost always they seem to be a perfected ver(to me anyway) and makes me wish the anime was like it. Only three I can think of are
Vandread Evangelion Rahxephon anyone know any others?

(as an introductory note, I don't think I'd describe most of the manga from anime productions as "perfected" versions of the original story..... nor do I think most of the manga writers would.... they just try and take a new tact on the original creator's work.... sometimes they try and correct some shortcomings, sometimes they try and take the story in sometimes radically different directions.... but I just think in most cases they perhaps add another dimension, but I wouldn't describe the Escaflowne or FLCL or Utena or Bebop or whatever mangas as superior to the original stories, for various reasons..... although I haven't read the RahXephon, Vandread or Eva manga).
After Escaflowne, Kawamori authorized two mangas to be created based on the basic story (one a shoujo and the other a shounen manga). I think TokyoPop has been bringing out at least one of them in English (or will be soon), but I don't remember which one. Both ended up taking a fairly different perspective on the basic show. Gundam has spawned a number of original manga after the main show.... including Gundam: The Origin, which was Tomino's vision based on retelling the original story in a more complex way from when Gundam first started..... there was also a Crossbone Gundam manga that was basically supposed to be what the whole Gundam F91 story would have been if it had been able to be a whole TV series instead of just a movie. Gundam Wing I think also spawned some original manga. I think Viz puts most of these out, although I think TokyoPop has the rights to some of the Gundam manga as well. Cowboy Bebop has spawned a few original manga, released in English by TokyoPOp. The Big O I believe has also spawned original manga, but I'm not sure. I'm pretty sure though the manga did come after the series. I think Viz puts this out. A FLCL manga was done after the series, and is also being released by TokyoPop. Macross 7 had a sort of "spin-off" manga called Macross 7 Trash, which told a new story set on the Macross 7 galaxy class ship, but didn't tie too much into Macross 7 itself. Revolutionary Girl Utena spawned a manga after the anime. Tenchi Muyo and El Hazard I think were both followed up by original manga stories (although I'm still not clear what came first, the Tenchi Muyo anime, the novels, or the manga.... at least a fair amount of the manga definitely came out after the anime though). -Freakzilla |

Oh the utena manga came after the manga?..I always thought it was the other way around for some reason.
Anyway it is true now that I think of it the vandread manga had a differenct perspective then the anime..the eva manga is actually pretty similar to the anime just a few things that, imo is what what would have made the anime soooo much better. Like it goes into more detail about the characters, also it doesnt have the same identity crisis of what type of story the creator wanted to make like the anime. Also do you have anymore info about the escaflowe mangas? I heard about a escaflowne manga that was made after the anime but I forgot about it for some reason. Im assuming one focuses on Van and the other Hitomi(and prob the one focusing on Van is being brought here). Do you know how many vols there are etc?

Ahh, that's interesting about the Evangelion manga.... I had heard from some friends who had read it that after a certain point it starts to diverge quite a bit and do things in a new and different way compared to the series.
Regarding Escaflowne.... I don't know much about either of the manga. I think this was just a case where Kawamori decided to authorize two different writers to do their own takes on Escaflowne, since the original anime was intentionally done to combine elements of both genres. I don't think it's so much that one focuses on Van and the other Hitomi as much as just that one focuses on the more shounen aspects of the Escaflowne story, and the other the more shoujo aspects. Although now that i think about it, I guess that would result perhaps in a differnt focus on those main characters. There are 8 volumes of the Escaflowne manga that TokyoPop has the rights to: http://www.tokyopop.com/dbpage.php?p...tegorycode=BMG (I don't know for sure, but I THINK this is the shounen one). -Freakzilla |

Some Evangelion spoilers ahead!
Comparing evangelion manga to evangelion anime is like comparing a polished diamond to unpolished one. The unpolished is bigger, but polished shines better. Imo in manga they sort of "polished" many personalities of the characters, avoideing the excessiveness sometimes seen in anime. Also many things that remained mysteries in anime (such as Toji's fate) are answered in manga. The general plot of manga is actually quite different (for example in anime Shinji and Asuka worked together to defeat the 6th angel, while in manga, Asuka defeated it alone, there are much less angels in manga, and so on), but the direction seems to be pretty much the same as with anime. The ending of manga is probably one of the biggest mysteries, as apparently man behind the manga, Sadamoto, hasn't decided if he will end it like the anime did or not. Btw, evangelion manga acutally started a few months BEFORE the anime aired. |
