Huh. Looks like a shounen version of IAAH.
Similar zombie designs and behavior, but less detailed and less horrifying... extra quirks.
And it seems like the guys doing the WWZ film saw this manga first.
Those zombies sure are good at forming themselves into mountains like that. In this case, however, the prison isn't just a convenient location, but the place where the main cast is from.

Aaaaaand it becomes quite obvious that this is a shounen story, yes.

wait... the zombies do have quirks like those in IAAH.
Jeez, these things seem like a complete and utter copy-paste in regards to the zombies(still way less frightening), and the pacing is like ripped from HSOTD.
The main difference being this "hive-mind" shit. That stuff looks utterly laughable.
Still, I'm kinda liking it so far. I like how the main characters(aside from the protagonist) are pretty genre-savvy.
However, there's some scenes that seem like lifted out of IAAH:

These zombies really are inferior to the IAAH zombies. Mostly just the type that comes at you all "SPLOGYWOOGIEWOO!!" and that's about it.
The author also draws them in a way that makes them barely even resemble human anymore.
There's nothing uncanny about these zombies. They're just plain monsters. So there's not actually anything scary about them.
Good horror mangas has me shaking and getting tense, with a notably higher pulse. I can distinctly feel that my pulse is "calm".
And now the author introduced these ridiculous

"dog"

zombies.
I will say, however, that the darn things smiling was pretty chilling. Still, it's such an asspull.
I can obviously forgive that the author cannot give the zombies the sheer amount of detail like in IAAH, but making them all look so over the top monstrous just makes them less scary.

Bitten-off noses and such things don't look horrific at all since we see it all the damn time.

So poor introductory build-up and rushed introduction of the zombies, zombies generally just don't look scary, poor sense of suspense and even poorer "jump scares". Some dumb "special" zombies that make even less sense than the zombie mountain and general shounen oddities.
However, I still find myself enjoying this to some extent, and the main cast is pretty likable.
No "token-girl" so far, or a "lamb". Won't be surprised if there eventually will be something like that, but the cast is likable enough.

Huh, was chapter 9 a Kill Bill reference? Almost exactly like that one scene in "The Origin of O-Ren".

I just started reading it, the non-awesomely violent one and it's so adorably awkward.

And on Apocalypse no Toride, the main difference between it and HotD is the lack of giant ass, back-breaking funbags. Aside from that and possible spoiler ahead:

ZOMBIE MOUNTAIN MOTHERFUCKERS YOU FUCKING SEE THOSE MOTHERFUCKERS RISE UP AND SHIT, TO CREATE A GIANT ASS ZOMBIE THRONE? THAT'S SOME REAL GOOD SHIT RIGHT THERE, THEY HAVE ZOMBIE MOUNTAIN BECAUSE IT'S ZOMBIE MOUNTAIN.

That was so plot relevant that you wouldn't believe. And I'm sure it happened, Thrawn don't make this kind of shit up.
