The only novels that correlated to manga that I've read were the Fullmetal Alchemists one. I personally found them lacking, but they were relatively enjoyable nonetheless. I think they can be read at full value only if you haven't read the manga first. Then they could work as a sort of preview of what the manga might be about.

tl;dr: Manga > novels.

I have read the first 2 VHD mangas and 11 of the VHD books, gratned I feel that the books are closer to the manga, than the movie was, but like everything else there are always differences between all of them

genrealy i don't like to compare novels/manga or manga/anime or books/movies, because they are different media and somethings which can be achived in a book can't be achiced in a manga or movies.

Well personally I think that whatever came first, no matter the medium, is the best. For example the Welcome to the N.H.K. novel was exactly the same as the Manga. However the Novel ended much earlier than the Manga (the Manga went about 3 vols more after the events of the Novel). When the Manga went out on its own it took on a much darker tone and I found myself laughing out loud a whole lot more.

To make a long story short, whatever comes first is the best.

Thumbs up Re: manga or novels

I have to disagree but sometimes it's not true. If you've read the manga, the anime and the real life movie of Deathnote for example, The original 2 is bad compared for the modified storyline in the movie (which was the latest to be released) since I watched it in reverse Movie (which sparked my interest) then anime (which is annoying specially those annoying 'near' and 'mhello') then manga.
