I've read this series a while back, and all the facts are right :)

so i just read half the first vol of merupuri, and based on what i read it's not that being in the dark makes him older, it's using magic (in that case, he just called the magic to turn it dark). did i misunderstand that part? could be i'm wrong.

I thought it was being it the dark that made him older.
I don't have the manga myself to comfirm it though, I borrowed it from a friend.

I understood it that after he used magic that first time, he now changes in the dark. It's a spell his brother put on him. Throughout the series he changes every time he goes in the dark, whether he uses magic or not. It's pretty confusing though. The main focus of the story is Airi's feelings, so some of the plot is hard to catch.

Hmm... it's been a while since I read it, but if I remember correctly he uses magic to darken the room, and because the room is now dark the spell that his brother cast on him is activated.

how about i make the synopsis say something like 'but after using his magic, he turns into 17year old... [etc]' to cover both bases? as it's ambiguous

(as opposed to the dark makes him turn that way - this is just saying what caused him to turn into it a the time, rather than the root cause)
