My godsister's birthday is coming up, and I am considering getting her a volume or two of a manga. She has never read any before, but I know she likes teen romance. (No sex scenes, she is under 18 and conservative.) What is a good manga to start with? I need something with as few culture clashes as possible.

I should have said before that she loves Jane Austen books, and she has never seen anime either. I just thought a shojo romance would be a fun change for her. She also loves Harry Potter, but not as much as romance.

Was Victorian Romance Emma a manga first? Very likely, so you should probably should check it out. I've only seen the anime, but it's clean romance, sweet, tragic and sad, mature, no sex, and set in Victorian era England.

Well it really depends on what they really like. I mean, if you're talking about the basic "shoujo fluff" with it's comedy rife with shoujo staples like bishounen and girl with some strike against her that she must overcome I'd recommend
CLAMP staples like Rayearth, Legend of Chun Hyang, and CCS Vampire Knight W Juliet S.A. I can't come up with too many "shoujo fluff" titles. If you're looking for something that's still "fluffy" but is a little bit deeper try Full Moon wo Sagashite Aishiteruze Baby Furuba Baby and Me Sunadokei (I think it's called Sand Chronicles) And if you're looking for "shoujo" that is not "fluff" but truly story-driven try Honey and Clover (a josei, not really a shoujo but is one of the best out there) Red River (I really don't remember if this is 18+) That's all I can think of right now. It's hard to dredge up "good" "true shoujo" and keep it under 18 as that is almost all "shoujo fluff," a genre I put slightly above shounen (so that's BAD). it's got a fade-to-white-then-they-are-in-bed-together scene but I figure that counts. Underage sex is still underage sex XD
