Hello, people. I have some manga I wish to scan. However, whilst some of this manga I would (with some consideration) debind as it isn't too expensive, some of this manga is very rare, or in some cases it isn't manga but very rare art books that cost me triple digits in GBP. Obviously, you can understand my reluctance to essentially destroy what cost me so much.
I've heard about those hand scanners which you can hold and easily scan things, but I've also heard the clarity isn't great. I want to scan my manga/art books at very high clarity, which goes for resolution, DPI, and the overall layout. (In other words, no distortion which is usually the case when not scanning flat documents.) Thanks!

First of all, the manga is nearly twenty years old and is out of print all over the world. No loss is made on anybody's part for a dead franchise. Only gain; sharing a passion. Secondly, mostly for personal reasons I am translating the manga. It was never translated to English. Thirdly, correct me if I'm wrong, but you're not the forum police.
If a moderator wants to close this thread, go ahead. But as far as I can tell, you do not have that power. It does seem you want it, though. |

Whoever said I was posting piracy sites or asking how to distribute piracy or encourage it? I hardly think that scanning my own media that I paid with my own cash is piracy. I guess we should take scanners off the market? I have no intention of pirating manga, nor do I ever download e-books, because despite the success of digital literature and books nothing beats the real thing.
That said, when an OOP manga of a franchise I enjoy so much (Outlaw Star, also an anime) isn't available physically in my language, I'm prepared to put in the effort so I myself can enjoy it. The only person being a "douche", as you United-Statesians put it, is you. Now, let us allow a moderator to decide what is and isn't allowed. |

This should help...
And here's a thread I'm too lazy to go through again, but may hold some relevance to what you're doing... Last edited by Serpico; 08-22-2012 at 03:22 PM. Reason: No need to argue guys... you're both from the UK btw... |

So should this...
If that comes across as rude, it's just an equal response to your own link. I created a thread to ask for help because I don't want to chop up my manga which cost so much, yet I want great clarity. I know how to use Google. You're painting a bad picture of this community. As for your second link, appreciated, but I'm already proficient enough to clean up any manga scans finely. |

Whoa, well I'll be sure to go through some of those top results from your link, and I would recommend you go through some of the top results from my link as well...
I was going to link to some guides that approach the subject you're asking about directly, but after reading Tae's post about posting links to "pirating sites", such as scanlation sites, not being allowed and such, I decided to take a more roundabout approach by linking to the google results, which just so happens has a lot of the links I was going to post, or are relatively easy to find from there on. I know most people use the "let me google that for you" thing in a condescending way, but I assure you that was not my intention. If I was going to be all condescending it would have been much more in your face... Well, whatever... I kind of messed up my initial intention by linking to bakabt anyway.... It also wouldn't hurt to make a thread there asking for help on the matter since they have a lot more qualified people to answer your questions than this forum... And that's it from me. Good luck in your endeavours ... |

Apologies for my misunderstanding, but as you yourself understand in the very vast majority of cases, LMGTFY comes off as condescending. However, the first result or "Feel Lucky" link from your link perfectly documents my dilemma. It describes two methods: debinding or bending. Both of these are undesirable. For the first option I'd need to take my manga and other books apart. You can understand why this is a problem for me when everything totals way over $300, and some books may be nigh on impossible to obtain in any near future.
For the second option, I'd still be damaging my books by bending anyway. Scanning them would be awkward and so would the results, since in many cases the scans would not be rectangular, and as previous mentioned, likely distorted. I was hoping some kind of advancement in technology might exist or some other alternative means of scanning which I'm unaware of, but I'll try asking elsewhere (such as BakaBT) if no one has a clue. This is the first place I turn to for anime/manga (since I do all my logging through the main site), so I made this thread on autopilot I guess. Thanks. |
