This would apply to any engine, whether you are using Yahoo! Widgets, Google Desktop, Windows Sidebar, etc, Rainlendar or other independent ones, right? :p
Useless trivia: Widget = Windows Gadgets. They are called, "Screenlets" in Linux, and "Dashboard" in Mac. |

Okay, regarding those gadgets, I used to have Yahoo! Widgets and Google Desktop:
1. Google = People who like simple, quick, organized gadgets 2. Yahoo! = People who like gadgets displayed anywhere, and like a lot of features available I also don't know why, but Yahoo Widgets were more stable for me compared to Google, yet Google Desktop consumed more space. In the end, I removed them both, and installed Rocketdock with a clock plugin, as well as Rainlendar. :D WARNING: DON'T EMULATE YOUR DESKTOP IF YOU WANT IT TO RUN QUICKLY. |

Never had much use for those. Currently only use a currency converter that is a little better than what comes with the OS.
In 2003 the old term widget was expanded to include these programs across several platforms. One such platform is Dashboard, which came along in 2005, but what lives there is still called widget. There have been several attempts by late-comers to introduce new terms like gadget, but they mostly failed. Which unfortunately makes it hard to find software for your platform of choice. |

I've never really found any widgets that are remotely interesting or useful to me. It seems like all of them are either boring/useless/redundant, or very niche applications (ie, like a friendfinder for a specific online game. Fine if you play that game, but if you don't...)
The only useful one I've ever found is dsclock. I like to keep my taskbar on autohide, but also like to be able to check the time at a glance. Since it's small/unobtrusive, and it sits on top of other windows, I can keep a clock down in the corner without having to keep the taskbar visible. One other such tool that I use sometimes, but I'm not sure if it counts as a desktop widget, is netgraph. It's a small prog that sits on top of other windows & shows me a real-time graph of my internet up/download speeds. Since both of these sit on top of other windows & not directly on the desktop, I'm not sure if either counts as a desktop widget, but they're the closest things I use, so... *shrug*
