watching anime, please show your support
That part of the rules just serves to encourage people to buy the dvds, it isn't a flat-out rule. How could it be? Anime airs on tv as well, and people could be watching it on there, or recording it from there to watch on their comps, or even just renting dvds, or renting anime from legal downloading/streaming sites like netflix or blockbuster. All of these are legal & legit alternatives. On top of that, there has been legal streaming anime for quite a while now. AOL's in2tv has had a few anime series (such as bubblegum crisis) for a long time, long before hulu or any of the other legal streams that are popping up now, and lets not forget the streaming eps available on funimation's site.

You don't need help playing any of those now do you?

The legal streaming audio has no language options. Neither does watching it on TV. Buying/renting DVDs have language options, but you shouldn't need help with that since it's incredibly straight forward. I assume downloading from netflix/blockbuster either don't have language options or the options are similar or the same as the DVD options.

It doesn't make sense that the rules state not to ask for places to illegally download anime from, but it's completely ok to illegally download anime and then get help getting it to work from here. I always thought not asking for places to download it implied not asking how to get it to work as well.

It's illegal to steal a car, but stealing one and then asking for help getting it to start is completely ok?

Couldn't have said it any better, i agree, it's pretty much the same sorta thing, if it's downloading anime illegally, once it's downloaded then asking for help to get it started is wrong anyways, i mean yeah i watch anime illegally, but i wouldn't ask for help getting the vids to work, cuz it's against rules in a sense

Playback help can apply to perfectly legit videos. Any video file created by an individual might have multiple audio and/or subtitle tracks, whether it's an illegal video, or some college project. In contrast, talking about downloading illegal vids applies directly to illegal vids themselves. That, I believe, is the philosophy behind the rules.

short version:
-wrong to talk about where to download animes illegaly/share the information ect/rules here

-okay to help with video playback/codec problems. because someone could really be making their own videos and having trouble playing them back on other computers. (although i think this is the wrong forumm for it?)

-mod area- closing topic related to playing back of illegally downloaded animes. as this falls within a grey area, the site isn't giving out the anime, the site is just here to the general public. You can't control what someone has or hasn't downloaded. this is nothing like stealing a car and then asking someone to help to get it started.

solution: point the person to the faq/rules section, report to a moderator and let the page sink to the bottom.

OK. First off, it is against the rules to ask where to obtain anime illegally or to provide that information to another user asking for it in the forums. Do not post links or other information of where to go to get it. Second, we allow discussion of various technologies in the FAQ/Tutorial section because most technologies that can be used for illegal purpose also have legitimate purposes as well. This thread is not OK because it is dealing with anime specifically. You have to understand that this is a U.S. based site and in the U.S. pirated anime i.e. subbed anime is illegal. It doesn't really matter whether it is licensed or not here. It is just that the various companies involved do not actively pursue legal options as a general rule. As Sothis is out of town, I am going to go ahead and close this. However, I don't believe she will be re-opening this thread regardless as anime discussion belongs in the Anime Discussion section and technical threads belong in the FAQ/Tutorial section... which is maybe why this particular issue has not specifically come up in a long while.
