Because people are clueless muppets that will use any excuse to belittle anime. I know quite a few people that won't even watch it because they're "too mature" for any of it. Or they'd rather not be subjected to tentacle rape.
Though Japan only has itself to blame when they actually start making live-action tentacle porn (I had the unfortunate moment of actually being witness to this >.<). Only a select few studios and mangakas actually take their work seriously. Others have just realised what a cash cow schoolgirls in skimpy clothing is because they're devoid of any real artistic talent. But I have to agree with Vivis on this; introduce your friend to something like Mononoke-hime. Hell, if they're patient enough to sit through 50 episodes give them Eureka Seven. Starting with movies is usually the best option - they have a limited time frame compared to series' but the best of them use that time wisely. No risk of your friend getting bored by the length either. |

I know the perfect anime to show your friend: Seikon no Qwaser.
And he may watch Queen's Blade afterwards.

People defines "sex scene" with pornography, but it isn't... a porn movie is something made for adults who wants to masturbate themselves (or do something else...). A sex scene in a movie/anime is just a SCENE, part of it, it doesn't matter if it is or not explicit. Animes (not hentais) normally tells a story with some kind of message to the people that whatch it, if it has or not these kind of scene, it doesn't make it a porn movie. (If it depended on that, "Wild things"(Movie), "boys don't cry"(also a movie) and Gantz (anime) would all be porn)

While I didn't have this experience, I did have something similar happen to me. I remember when I got Advent Children, when it first came out. My mother saw a part of it, and she said, "Ooooh, he said a bad word." She was joking, but I thought it was weird. I watch pg-13 and R rated movies, but she apparently it isn't a big deal if they cuss in those live-action movies. They just find it hard to accept that any animated film or series could be anything more than PG.
I'm surprised nobody mentioned Yosuga no Sora. It's pretty explicit for a TV anime. They seem to pretty much show everything besides the genitals. Quite a surprise. |

Yea, people just react weird cuz it's a "cartoon" it really is because of the mind set that cartoons are for children and children don't watch "dirty" things. It's all just people and their silly mind sets. I don't let it bother me, with every anime I watch I try to watch for the plot and story line, if there is or isn't nudity or sex scenes, doesn't bother me or get me excited. I do what I want ha ha :)

It's called hypocrisy, but in the case of the US it's understandable because animation is mostly made for kids and teens and not so much for adults so people wouldn't be exposed to it unless they watched some anime or the rare domestic works like the Heavy Metal movies. Nobody has the balls to make a serious sophisticated work of animation for adults because we have Hollywood so most of that kind of talent would flow into the live action medium instead, because that's where the money is. Because nobody bothers to attempt to make sophisticated shows/movies for adults it only reinforces the stupid stereotype that animation is for children and we should all have "grown out of it" by now. Thus animation dealing with complex subjects like sex in relationships is like culture shock to some people. Of course, I'm also speaking from personal experience here having my mind blown by the Encore Action Channel back when I was a teenager. Interestingly enough, I wrote a huge essay on this subject for my English Composition class in college; got an "A" on it too. I wish I had thought to keep it afterward.

In Seikon no Qwaser, the titty scenes are part of the plots and not just thrown in there to fill the titty quota of the episode or put in needless titties to cover up the bullshit plot.
