I liked it in the second Evangelion movie, but then, it's all about setup and timing. Most anime which use it execute the idea as lazily and tiredly as it is invoked. But, like guy-hits-boobs-with-his-head, it's not something I think will go anywhere anytime soon. Yeah that's pretty terrible. It's such blatant viewer insertion as it idolizes the most basic and undemanding level of empathy. The hero doesn't have to do anything, and usually still enjoys whatever implicit advantages his identity gives him over the subject he is conceding does not need to be treated with abject contempt all the time. It's not much else than pandering. |
