It was a two year timeskip from 17 to 19, for hell's sake. There's not much else to do other than changing her looks, which Oda did and now she does look effectively older.

I think the original point was the "boobiness" of female characters in Anime.
I actually find it ironic that most anime girls have huge knockers whereas women in Japan don't. And sexist.

Japan at least has something of a fanbase for flat chests.
All the girls are strippers in American comics.

Angel Beats' comedy was a mixed bag. It had some genuinely funny moments (some of the black humour particularly - episode 2 had some of the show's best gags), but it also had really painful recurring jokes (the "Call me Christ" guy - wasn't funny the first time, the second time, the third time...) but since it had at least some funny bits the humour is definitely one of AB's strong points.

When I see the anime of Toriko and that female character added I only can laugh. ALL Shonens must include a female character for connecting with female public although she is a useless/annoying/unimportant piece of shit (or not and she's decent (few cases)), and from begining. For example, in the anime of One Piece, they included to Nami in the two first adventures (and the manga in the first cover of the first chapter, although it was the past of Luffy and she wasn't there until six chapters later). I mean, they ALWAYS put a girl with the protagonist, it's like the editors forced them to put her.

And, as Toriko doesn't have her (by the sexual condition of his author I suppose) in the anime they put it. And later in the manga it will be a ¿fanservice? scene with a manly female character, like his editor forced him too. It's very funny how are the japaneses tendencies.

Also wow that looks just... wow. The last movie had some fantastically mindbendingly surreal animation, and I'd be a fool to not expect Eva to pull out all the stops for a third time in a row. And Shiro Sagisu, as usual, just killing it with that soundtrack.

Can't wait.

(Also I believe the pink mecha is Mari's... I think. Pink-haired woman may not be a mecha-pilot.)

It's a basic shounen formula.
Sasuke only exists because Kishimoto's editor said that Naruto needed a rival character.

Nami, on the other hand, was thought out before Oda actually started making One Piece.

As you can see, he was weighing various options. (he also got better at drawing legs)
Doesn't matter if a character's gender is decided by a "formula". What matters is if the author can make it a good character.
