The second season has a greater involvement from the original mangaka than the first anime series, and was produced by a different animation studio (with noticably big changes in animation and character designs).
It does however treat the events of the first season as having 'happened' and while it contradicts one aspect of that show's end it does it as a clear retcon 'oh you thought X happened but really Y happened' rather than pretending the first series didn't handle it at all. What I mean is But frankly IMHO the second season and OVA are complete wastes of time, and I adore the Madhouse anime. Quote:

Hey I did say I loved Kare Kano. Ghibli in particular has done some great anime romances (Ocean Waves is probably my favourite but let's hear it for Whispers of the Heart and Only Yesterday why not). Kuragehime was one of last year's best comedies, if not the best. And while I did skewer Sakamichi no Apollon a bit upthread, that was basically a good anime I enjoyed watching. Past that... ah... Skip Beat was fine? Does that count as romance?
It's not a favourite genre and you could fairly say I'm not well disposed towards it - as I am, obviously, well disposed towards mindfuck anime - but I don't simply hate its guts as I do with harems. Tonari wasn't bad as much as it was frontloaded with character designs and tones I just do not care for, and I was not in the mood to consciously make an effort to look past that to find something to cling to and try to like that. So Toradora instantly came to mind as a show that was praised to the high heavens, which I tried to like, but also honestly was simply not very good. Sure, maybe on reflection Tonari has Skip Beat levels of 'this is okay to watch and I like it' or even Kuragehime 'man this is fun'. But that's for another time. |

^ I honestly think Tonari is way better than Toradora in every level. As you say you probably won't be willing to watch the whole show once it's over, so I'd rather recommend to watch at least three episodes while it's ongoing, whenever it happens you're in the mood. I'm sure you'll find it considerably more endearing than most other rom-coms you've watched, even if you're far from being a fan of the genre. If you're not convinced with it after three episodes and being in a receptive/open-minded mood, then sure, I'd say give it a pass.

I know tons of people that dropped Tonari after one episode but as everyone else mentioned you should at least watch 3 episodes before dropping it.
I HATE shoujo anime and there is not one shoujo anime I have not watched then dropped. Obviously I would expect to do the same with Tonari but after watching 3 episodes the show really grew on me and now I look forward to when the new episodes come out every week ^_^
