I too wonder what the hell he was thinking when he named that thing. Maybe Ichigo bleaches his hair orange or something.

Yeah, I've never understood the name. Guess there's some meaning lost in translation or something, as the series never makes any sort of monster analogy.
And cover art always includes a chain leash, which I've never understood either.
Eh, not that I mind. When I first picked up the manga I thought it was going to be something with a tsundere female treating the boy like a dog or some shit like that.
Saying that my assumption was "wrong" would be a severe understatement.

Maybe Kubo was doing laundry and thought "Crap! Where did I put the bleach? ...wait, bleach, shinigami, death... this is brilliant! This is what I'll call my new series! Renown and fame, here I come!"

... I always thought it was a very obvious reference to the purifying effect of the zanpakutou on the hollowed souls. 'soul bleach', if you will. I think I decided that around episode 2 of the first season.

Well apparently that is exactly it. I think.
A scene conveniently left out of the anime has Ichigo talking about how he was bullied for his hair color, which apparently is Bleached.
Or originally was intended to be so, or, bah, Kubo never mentions it again. I have no fucking idea.
That one manga scene is all that comes to mind.
