Deciding what to watch next now that I've finished Toradora.. Something that doesn't involve school. I haven't read or heard much about A Certain Scientific Railgun, and so I've checked the synopsis
In the technologically-advanced Academy City, millions of students study.. So yeah, it looks like it does. lol

And it's a spin-off, so it would make less sense to start with it.

Yeah, but to be honest it really doesn't matter. You'll miss some of the minor scenes/cameos, but the plot doesn't really rely on Index beyond its role in establishing the setting/world.

Oh, I see. I guess I'll just read some of the reviews and decide whether to watch Index or not.

Pretty much.
Railgun is for those (many) who really love Misaka enough to tolerate the boring supporting cast of Railgun.
Index is a pretty much standard shounen though, albeit the story is notably more convoluted than most.
It gets surprisingly enjoyable though. Especially after the introduction of certain characters.

Then Index II comes after and is goddamn fucking rad!
Pick up Railgun between the two seasons for maximum effect.

I found myself disagreeing significantly with the official A-P review.
If you can enjoy good shounen then you can enjoy this one.

On a minor note, the main character isn't afraid of punching women. Good Haruhi, that is so immensely satisfying. I fucking hate these "gentlemen" protagonists. Unless you're Sanji, I do not buy that shit.

I really enjoyed Index and Railgun, with Railgun being a bit better than Index. But Index II was amazing and was far better than the other two if you ask me.

I'd watch Index before Railgun though. Index eases you into what Misaka is like as a character more than Railgun, so for that reason alone i think it's worth watching Index first. You'll also understand the Cameo's if you have prior knowledge of Index.

Just don't expect either of them to be consistently good. Quality is very fluctuating on these depending on the arc and characters involved.
