DAT: How long do people think it takes The Twelve Kingdoms to get interesting (if it does at all)?

I watched six episodes and it's been stopped there for centuries. I don't really feel like pulling through, so some well-founded expectation might do the trick.

That's great in so many ways.

Lol, I only made it 3 episodes :)

I confess I am not really a fan of fantasy though.

Heh, well, fantasy is actually my favorite genre, so there's a higher chance for me to enjoy it than, say, a school-life or a sci-fi... but it also means I'm going to be very picky in a different way.

Anyway, I relatively have quite a bit of spare time these days so I may give it another go soon.

On another news... I just happened to see that Sasami-san@Ganbaranai's ratings are pretty terrible both in AniDB AND here. So, uh... is it that bad? I mean, it is strange to see a recent Shaft work with such poor reception.

No it's not bad at all, the ratings are horribly skewed because of one and done's. If you watch the first episode you'll see why some people will keep watching it and why others would drop it and rate it a .5/5. It's quintessentially shaft.

I actually like it a lot.

Fantasy would be my favorite, but there's just too much bad and mediocre fantasy for me to put it on that pedestal.
On the other hand, well done fantasy stories are more likely to wind up being something I'd love. And there's a few of those, yes.

Twelve Kingdoms is definitely one of the better fantasy anime I've seen, but then, it appeals to me because it really indulges in one of the things I like most about the genre: The capacity for elaborate and sweeping world-building. It does a lot about the politics and the social order of the hierarchical feudal monarchies, there's just a lot of scope to the damn thing which is nice. As chii says the first episodes are pretty poor (to the point I was thinking what the hell was the point of watching the series) but it does improve as it progresses and overall was a very worthwhile watch.

And while I like the genre, I do prefer sci-fi and that's my favourite anime genre (so it's perhaps no surprise that my two favourite anime right now are both sci-fi shows).

Proper exposition is, in my opinion, the most important thing for any series that goes heavily into the world-building stuff.
I think that is one of those things most fail at.

Well that's it then. Those are pretty much my favorite things in a fantasy story (plus the grand battles), and the main focuses in which I'd love to base my own future writings.

Up to where I've watched it didn't seem to be anywhere near getting those done (more like yet another underachieving girl-in-strange-world waste of time, actually), but it's not as though it was impossible for that to change given the setting, and what you say does sound convincing. Yep, I'm taking your word for this one!
