I prefer the late 90s aesthetics over more recent art styles too. Give me Cowboy Bebop, CCS, or NGE character designs any day...
That said, the quality of backgrounds (detail and lighting) in recent anime is pretty much in a league of its own now. |

I agree with what DontStay said about old anime having more variety in art styles. Albeit there are exceptions and most manga/light novel authors have their own way of drawing, anime adaptations tend to ''standarize'' them somewhat.
That's not to say there were many old styles which were actually that good, though. Variety, yes, but mediocre variety mostly.

There are certain studio's where everything they animate can all look like it's came from the same show, and that annoys me. The variety around at them minute is good, I like that Gainax was brave enough to animate P&SwG the way they did, but I do think that some of the shows from the 90's had prettier animation with more interesting character designs (mmmm Utena...
)Having said that, one of my favourite character designs is those from Mawaru Penguindrum which is pretty recent. |

Nichijou having too poor sales to warrant an international release is heartbreaking.
I'm damn near tempted to just go find some place to legitimately buy the raw Japanese version, just so that I can feel I've given my proper support. I'd buy this shit on blue-ray so damn fast... Edit: Apparently it is getting a subs-only release for New Zealand and Australia. Oh hell yes I'm ordering that shit from the other side of the world when it comes!!

^ I was just about to say "but Australia's got it, we've had the episodes streaming from the distributor for a few months now."
I should add it to my list, but I've already got over 60 anime on my WtW list...but the prospect of a slapstick anime sounds really good right now. |

I have to agree. I love the character designs from the late 90s, but I also really like the whole 90s, and the 80s too. I'm watching Space Adventure Cobra from 1982, and the characters look great.
