DAT: I just started The Big O. If you'd asked me to guess when it was made, I would've said around the mid to late 80's - I defiantly wouldn't have guessed this was made in 1999. Can't tell if series dated badly or I just suck at guessing when things were made.

The giants are just too similar to those zombies for me to be able to imagine otherwise. I basically imagine something to the effect of the howls of the HL2 fast zombies. Though a bit more "big", and not very high strung so to speak. And those scenes where some giants Some of the Giants I can imagine as being completely mute though. Especially that big one, and the smaller ones that kinda look like somewhat oversized naked dudes. Those are just goddamn creepy. I imagine there'll be used growls, heavy breathing and certain guttural sounds. |

Are you watching in full quality? It's otherwise very hard to see the designs properly, it's a bit of a minimalist aesthetic.Partly, of course, you're right that the very minimalism makes it seem a bit cartoony. Whether that's what they were going for or the result of budget restrictions I still haven't really figured out. |

Not that I'm hating the series. I'm quite enjoying it. It just gives me a strange feeling of nostalgia for something I've never seen before... |

The Big O's style has visuals influenced by the Art Deco styling of Batman: The Animated Series (which is from the 1990s, which should help with dating) while the robot on the show is admittedly a call back to older, more cumbersome anime robots.
'A strange feeling of nostalgia for something I've never seen before' sounds exactly right, also. It's really quite a clever and cool series. |

The fact, though, is that the author doesn't use any ''moaning'' dialogue bubbles or SFX, so with that I suppose I've subconsciously assumed they're mostly silent. Pretty sure the author means it that way as well. Something like this staring at you without making a sound is way more creepy than having them whine like your everyday zombie.

I do have the applaud the series for how well it utilizes the uncanny valley, though some of the newer designs I've seen aren't really all that scary, and are rather just hilarious to look at. ![]() Sound effects must be used carefully, especially with more "absurd" monsters. The zombies in I am a Hero mostly do not have any sfx either, but when they do... fuck... "RED LIGHT, GREEN LIGHT, ONE TWO THREE " *chomp* |

DAT: I love how shows like Btooom come off as crap to a guy like me, a self professed lover of shallow story and big action. Guess I do have some semblance of taste after all.
