(Especially when compared to some of the plot of Diebuster) <- which could be TTGL's sister, for how similar they are.
Daibuster was pretty much the beta test for Gainax's post 2002 style, so it's no coincidence. Same studio + same genre + a large percentage of the same staff = remarkably similar shows.

^ A friend watched it a little ago and I rewatched a little of some eps with him. I laughed quite a bit with parodies/references I couldn't possibly catch before... especially the one for Kaiji!!!

Great comedy.

Not filtering through all the previous posts, but I would like to add two shows to this list.

The first is Mononoke that I adore for its peculiar art work and main character. My impression is that not all that many know or have heard about it, and I'm also quite sure that even if you have, the art work will probably shy even more away for not being more mainstream in style.

The second name I would like to mention is Pale Cocoon. It's great because it's a 40 min single episode OVA, and it does require one to rewatch it to probably fully appreciate it. Again it seems to be quite obscure and not that well known. It is also a bit ballsy (although not as much as Mononoke) in that it has no background music at all except for the very end, showing what great effects silence can have on the atmosphere.

YESSS. I love this anime! Very underrated, oh and it's one of the rare anime I chose to watch dub over the sub, I think the dub adds to the comedy.

I just saw Angel's Egg / Tenshi no Tamago and it's definitely underrated. Though I absolutely adore it! Other underrated titles include:

* Kaiba
*Mononoke
*Boogiepop Phantom
*Princess Arete
* My Neighbors the Yamadas

These aren't underrated as in "The majority dislikes them", though most people are either a) not aware that these exist or b) vaguely aware of a few of them but do not plan on watching them. This is a shame as they're all great!

I'd say, watching Gunbuster totally needs to be done in full episode OAV format. Not the movie version.
Gunbuster movie version gutted a lot of the story, no feel to the characters/coach/transition from lighthearted to somber/less of Jung.
The only reason to have the movie versions, is the fact it is the only way to see the original Gunbuster in HD. The ending Black and White in 16.9 ratio is magnificent.
