Default Doing it RAW

I've been wondering about this for a while so I'm going to ask about it.

Have you ever watched entire episodes of anime RAW, that is to say, unsubbed without knowing Japanese?

While I understand looking at it if it isn't subbed, or skimming it because you are impatient, I don't understand watching entire episodes where you can't understand basically anything that is being said.

I guess if you are just interested in seeing the video and japense audio, and don't care about what is actually being said, but I find that rather odd.

So, what do you think about about people who watch entire episodes of unsubbed anime that is in Japanese and they don't know Japanese, and furthermore have you done this yourself?

Personally, I think it's usually said as an excuse for lying about what they actually have watched on their lists, but that's a different matter.

I did it once or twice. It's easy to pick out a few key words here and there to make out what they're talking about but in the long run it's very ineffective. Last time I did that was probably a year or a little more then a year ago. Since then, I've stuck with subs until I'm comfortable being able to follow a conversation.

In all, to answer your question, I believe people either do it to make their AMVs or out of curiosity. If people are doing it just to watch the show with out paying attention to dialogue, they're wasting their time.

I do it from time to time, but mainly in order to test my Japanese. It has nothing to do with being impatient, since most shows I watch unsubbed are from simple series I don't really care about (ex: Ikkitousen Great Guardians), or on some occasions, I will watched some episodes from series I've already seen for the same purpose (I did buy the Kara no Kyoukai Tsūkaku Zanryū R2 dvds after all... and watched it a couple of times).
My Japanese is far from perfect, but I do understand the basics of what's being said. So yeah, I've done it before but I certainly wouldn't say it's an excuse. :P

I've done it once, but that was so that I could add an obscure entry to the DB - only about half a dozen episodes were available, none of them subbed. It was a series aimed at very young kids so you could kind of tell what was going on without understanding the language, though I could pick up on a few bits. Plus each episode was only like 5 minutes each.

I don't generally see the point of watching something without the subs; I want to know what's going on. I get annoyed if I'm watching a sub and huge chunks of the dialogue are left unsubbed *coughs and glares at the ****** sub of Lupin III vs Detective Conan (NOT the DCTP/Frostii version - they're actually good sub groups.)*

I sometimes rewatch episodes I've already seen and really liked from random anime again in their raw format just to see just how much I can pick up from the conversations :)

I cant really stand to watch something I can't understand.. well except spanish soap opera's and skin flicks but skin flicks ur not really paying attention to story and spanish soap opera's seem funny somehow just through their actions.

If I'm bored, have nothing to do and a new episode is out and not subbed yet, yea I'll watch it raw. It doesn't bother me that I can't understand most of it, I enjoy the moments where I do pick up some of the words.

Yes, I have!

I watched girls bravo raw because they were uncensored and had boobs in them while the subtitled one at the time was the fog covered one. Ultimately I played both at the same time with one window hovering over the other with just the subtitles showing on the subtitled ver.

Couldn't you have just extracted the subs and then put them in the raw? Unless it was hardsubbed.

Note to self: Should have added a qualifier like "with no expectations of it being subbed" since that seems to be a prevalent theme.

Only the last episode of Mouryou no Hako (which still hasn't been subbed after about a year, or something, gah). Besides that, no. My japanese skills don't exist. At all. And I don't care enough to watch anything without knowing what's happening.
