Default What should I do for CLAMP relations?

so i've been holding off on adding relations for the weakly related clamp titles - ie, tsubasa chronicle and xxxholic sharing a character. here's why:

recommendations are set up as either 'immediate' or 'distant'. the idea being that you cant make recs between 'immediate' relations (as the reader should look in the relations tab instead), but 'distant' are weak enough that maybe recs between them is ok.

i set up distant specifically for clamp but am having second thoughts about it being necessary at all, maybe.

relations have an optional reason - so for tsubasa/xxxholic, for example, the reason could say 'shares a character'. the idea behind setting them up as immediate relations is so your recs wouldnt be cluttered up by related series, just unique ones, and then the relations tab would have the list of relations too.

thoughts on this? is anyone really really opposed to not allowing recs, essentially, between these weakly related clamp series?

the same question applies for things like excel saga/puni puni poemi, etc.

I, personally, think that recs between distantly related series are fine. While they will sometimes be off, some distant series have gotten so large that recs between them would be the only way to find what you want to watch.

Not really sure what you're getting at. Is the relations tab going to be used for sequels and such?

Well. I think that the only recs you should maybe not allow would be between sequels. Even if both the animes are from CLAMP, then it doesn't have to mean that people should know of the other if they know one of them. And about xxxHolic and Tsubasa Chronicles sharing characters. Well that might be. But I still didn't know about Tsubasa Chronicles, even though I'm collecting the xxxHolic manga. I knew there were shared characters, I had heard somewhere, but I didn't know it was in Tsubasa Chronicles.

So I think only maybe sequels/prequels would be consider as "obvious" and listed in the relations tab. That maybe could be renamed then. Besides, Just because you love one of CLAMP's works, maybe you hate another one. I like xxxHolic, I hate Magic Knight Rayearth...

Do you mean getting rid of distant relations completely? I guess if you made a new type called "distant" or something similar and then wrote in how they are related it could work. Maybe the already existing "alternate universe" would work as well though. I'm not really sure how much that covers.

I feel this approach would have some problems, probably with large series, but I can't exactly think of what they would be. It's mostly just a feeling rather than anything that I know.

As for the recs: Redundancy irks me a little, but I don't see any problem with it if everyone is fine with it.

I think recs should be allowed for distant relations. 'Shares a character' doesn't tell me how similar the 2 anime are, so I need recs to tell me that.

I think this would be the best idea.

and i agree with allowing recs for these as it's another method of letting people know that the 2 anime in question are related in someway or another. a definite NO for direct sequels though

I think the recommendations between XXXholic and Tsubasa are pointless. Saying that they shares the same characters can be true at the beginning, but far deeper into the anime/manga the 2 stories collapse into one big plot.
The Tsubasa movie and the XXXholic movie, xxxHOLiC Shunmuki and Tsubasa Shunraiki, tell essentially the same two storylines from two different perspectives.
We could also add CCS with them, but the connection is not so close like the other ones.
Clamp just play on the dimensional jump, but they all shares the same timeline.

On the other side I could agree on the recommendations with RG veda, because the stories are not directly linked, but they shares only the characters (king Ashura). Here we can speak about alternative worlds.

i think maybe someone could write up something here in the forums on how/what characters or settings or whatever are related in each of the clamp works and have a handy little link on the anime page that brings you here to explain further. or just put it in each entry.... i dunno...

(this is jumbles thought... sorry if it makes no sense)

keep in mind that the recs that come through for things like xxx/tsubasa, ALWAYS say 'they share the same characters'. they never say the series are similar or anything else - it's always only about sharing the character, which is why i feel like they're kind of useless (and would be served just as well with having a relation)

They don't share the same characters. They are two stories that overlap and are happening at the same time in the same universe. Tsubasa and xxxHolic are much like telling the story of two characters who interact in the 12 Kingdoms magical world and its Japan world. That's why while you can read (and watch) one without the other, the entire story only comes from reading (and watching) both (hell, CLAMP said themselves that the two are meant to be read together if you want the story). Much like how if you want to collect all the Pokemon you need multiple versions of the same game.

Puni Puni Poemy is a spinoff. Much like how Kujibiki Unbalance is a spinoff of a show in Genshiken.
