when you have a dream of anime, you have gone past casual ^.^ and when your world seems to act itself out in anime and you see giant mecha instead of planes, magical girls instead of chearleaders, etc. you have gone past the normal anime freak =P

I think as soon as you consider taking money out of living expenses to buy more anime, then you're past casual. After a little online shopping spree I did I lived off of $10 for over a week until pay day. I ate only food I got for free from work, ramen, and rice. I don't want to do that again. Or if you turn down going out to drink with friends to watch more anime.

lol i would say if you have ever finished an entire series in a single day uv pased casual (done it).
if you have ever watched 2 entire series in a single day you have passed casual (done it ><)
series =12-24+ eps
or if you started watching anime at a certain date that you remimber and youve calculated that you spend an avarage of ~4hr's a day/night, uv passed casual (no comment)

When you start thinking about what to watch next,as the post above says when you finish a series in a single day,when you start buying stuff you're past casual.

I've got 2 friends that i can easily say they're casual.If they got anime(which is taken from me :S) they watch it yeah,but they dont miss watching anime if they dont have anything.

These guys have a point,

when the time come around to the point where you are immerse in the anime culture, in terms that

-you know almost every mainstream anime,
-the characters and synopsis,
-start to buy the box-set,
-wearing anime merchandise,
-buying wall-scroll,
-spending at least 24 hours worth of anime in a week
-and saying Desu in a constant intervals,

then there my friend you have no become a casual anime fan, but my brother you have become a otaku.

My belief is that you stop being a "casual" anime watcher when you start watching a number of series just "because they are anime" and not because they attract you in any other way.
