...what do you recomend?

hey im somewhat new to anime and im looking for some recomendations. my introduction to anime was through samurai champloo cuz im a huge hip hop head and it just looked like a generally cool show and i loved it. the surreal hip hop centric edo japan, characters and action where awesome. i even bought it on blu ray. and that turned me on to cowboy bebop which is now my favorite anime i loved the wantanabe style with the music, art and general vibe from it but in the end what really won me over was the great character development and perfect ending. i watched death note for over 20 episodes and im sure ill get crucified for this but i hated it. i thought the writing in the first few episodes was completely absurd but even once that settled down i couldnt stand the characters considering none of them had any, well, character and to me the plot just became a series of aimless twists and took itself way more seriously than entertainment ever should.
so based on this what would you recomend? it cant be something like death note that takes itself too seriously but i also appreciate good writing and characters. i would prefer if there was a dubbed version thanks
