This is why I keep my anime interests on the DL most people think just because I like anime that this is what I'm like....anyone else feel this way? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FuJMjnpUap0

Oh yes, though truthfully there are people like in that video if not worse that exist, part of the reason I don't have that many RL anime fan friends, I can stand it for a few days at conventions but otherwise I want to smack them, so just like chat roulette "you have to wade through a bunch of d*cks to make a few good friends"
Anywho, sidetracked, it's not like I hide that I'm an anime fan, I have some tshirts and will talk to other people about it if they bring it up, otherwise meh. Sidenote: Anyone else go "RUFIOOOOOO!!" during that? |

Well, it's not like I wear a t-shirt saying "I LOVE ANIME", but most of my friends know of my interest in it. Some of them also watch anime, but it's mainly stuff like Naruto, Bleach and Dragonball. I actually got two of my best friends into anime by showing them Eden of the East and Perfect Blue. So yeah, I would gladly talk about anime if someone asks me but I wouldn't bring it up first. I also think this documentary is fake, even though I've met a guy like this. He's 40.

Everybody that knows me, knows I like anime, since I have posters in my room and lots of pins in my school bag, but it's not like I'm only talking about anime and I love everything that is japanese. I don't know if they think that I'm like on those videos, but it's not like I care of what they say anyway.

Yea I know its a parody haha its pretty obvious. But I suppose I just haven't told the most understanding people. I told three of my friends in 10th grade that I like anime and they refused to associate themselves with me anymore. They basically thought they were to cool to hang out with me even though we all had been friends since 6th grade. I told my girlfriend that I liked anime and she dumped me two weeks later. I don't even talk about anime at all during my interactions with people IRL. The only time I talk about anime is online or if someone else brings it up first. So I suppose I've just been unlucky.

I've never really had issues like in that satirical video.
While I don't hide my interests, I don't openly flaunt them either...I'll keep my single figure (Lina Inverse) on my desk at home...if people want to ask me about what it is or why it's there, I'll happily answer. The perception I find others have is that anime is not an unknown or mocked market, but not generally a widely popular one. It is generally the same as admitting you're an avid video game player at this point. If you admit you like games, people will often ask "You mean like Halo or Call of Duty?" (and, being the strategy nut I am, I feel compelled to correct them). Similarily, if you say you like anime, the common question is "Like Naruto/Pokemon?" (again, I do correct them on this). |
