I suddenly realized that I have odd taste in anime. I don't mean that I'm partial to unusual genres or anthing. However, I just realized that my two favorite shows right this very moment are JuoOhSei and Ouran High School Host Club. These are definitely two shows with very little in common. It occurred to me that this might be normal or it might be strange. So I ask you, are you genre specific or are you more the random pick-up type?

My preferred genre is one that has a very serious tone most of the time with little romance and lots of action....however, the stranger the characters are (and I mean real oddballs) the more I like the series whether or not the story is any good

I like a lot of old stuff. Stuff that was more cutting edge when it came out, and didn't necessarily become a mold for other anime to be based off of.
That and comedy and good action (hate crappy action), ecchi can get pretty boring. Depressing stuff is ok if it has a point (Now and Then Here and There), otherwise it's pointless. |

I tend to like the sci-fi mecha ones, or the magic fantasy ones which have a serious tone, but manage to get in some comic moments here and there.
A bit of pretentiousness never hurt anyone, either. So Escaflowne, Gundam Seed, Samurai Champloo, they match my tastes. I realise I've mentioned the big mainstream names, but what can you do? |

What I like? Hmm, it's getting really hard for me to enjoy anime, nothing seems to be that interesting anymore. I randomly pick up shows which I drop after 4 to 6 episode. If the anime follows a story, I'll stick with it, but if it goes on and on doing the same thing my interest in it goes out the door.

I guess I'm more the random type... I like animes like Evangelion, Cowboy bebop or samurai x. That are more serius, and have a hisotrical or religious background but I also like fun animes like Di Gi Charat Nyo (yes I do, and I'm not ashamed).

i usually like anime that have awesome action, with a good dose of comedy, and just a pinch of romance.. but i just like seeing the hard ass character grow a soft spot and become protective over the people he's with. like kenshin and what not. or jet/mech type animes like Macross/Robotech and Area 88.

I mostly got into anime with the mirimax presentation of Princess Mononoke, though I'd had some experience with TV-based anime before that. I'm definitely more partial to Miyazaki/Takahata's movies (grave of the fireflies, for example), and serious anime than over-the-top anime.
Two shows I started watching before they became incredibly popular (at a friend's advice, becuase I'd just become very enthusiastic about the genre due to mononoke) were Naruto and Fullmetal Alchemist - FMA I find to be much, much better than Naruto in general, especially because of the depth of ideas in it. Naruto's been getting better recently, (I haven't watched the fillers, once they started showing them I just read the manga so I'd know when to start watching again) though it's still nowhere near FMA in quality in my opinion. The only 'silly-funny' anime I've liked was the Irresponsible Captain Tylor series, mainly because someone likened me to Tylor at one point, and so I ended up watching it all in one night. |
