Hide synonyms

That most series show up several times in lists can get pretty annoying, especially if you want to count something.

AniDB has a checkbox "hide synonyms", but I fear AP insists on international titles, so how about a popup menu that defaults to "Show synonyms" but also has "Japanese titles" and "English titles"?

I'll vouch for this as well.

Re: Hide synonyms

i fully agree that this is an issue, i'm just not sure how to fix it.

the problem isn't EN vs JP, it's that those fields are only marked if there's a verified R1 or R2 name (not just an english version of a fansub translation of a JP title, but an actual, licensed R1 title).

for this reason, a huge amount of titles are marked 'Alternate' as the type. though they aren't visible, there are actually about 6 types of titles (some being searchable, some 'visible' - ie, they dont show up in the alpha list, but do show up in the entry, etc). having a dropdown for each of these would be confusing to say the least, since people who choose 'show JP', let's say, wouldnt actually see everything they'd expect.

there isn't a good solution for this based on how the site is set up now, at least not that i can think of, and doing something like a db schema refactor (or really, a design change across the entire site wherever there's a list) seems like it might not be the best way to use resources.

as always i'm open to ideas, though

So the only thing that's certain from the start, the original title, is not marked as such?

I can't make suggestions without information. Maybe a screenshot of the form used to enter series?

As I see it, there are two reasons why you'd want to do this, with two possible solutions.

The first:
Being able to select JP or USA title, you'd only be shown the titles in the state of choice, and not just every single one visible. Currently, this isn't really possible to achieve, as it'll need quite and overhaul in the current naming system to be effective.

The second:
When browsing one of the many anime / manga lists A-P has, say, on all the action shows from this decade. Specific language of the titles is less of an issue, but it's simply a hindrance to have titles appear several times when searching through the multiple entries (for example, when sorting on avg. rating, or simply seeing what was made that year). I think this one is much easier resolved by giving users the ability to check a "Display main titles only" box. Or more radical, only display the main title of anime in the lists to begin with.

I don't see any system to what appears at the top of series pages. Unfortunately many use the US title, which I rarely recognize.

define 'original title'

What appears in the opening of the Japanese broadcast.

Does your 'R2' refer to Japan or Europe/UK?

My point is that in those cases, it matters much less as how they appear in the list, as long as they appear once. I'm not sure about other A-P users, but I frequently search for specific themes (for example, 11-15 episodes, fantasy and romance, TV series, 1990-1999). When doing searches like that, a box to hide all names but the main ones would be very helpful.

Actually, you just pointed out something important. For example, if someone is going through the meta-list to create his or her anime list, you would think it'd be handy to select "Show JP (or USA) titles only". However, it won't be as effective as people might think. For some titles people only know either the one or the other name, and which one it is varies from title to title. In those cases, it'll actually be HELPFUL to have both titles displayed on the list, even if it takes a bit longer to reach the end of all pages.

I stand by my point, a "Display main title only" button would be helpful when doing advanced searches to avoid cluttering up the results with double titles.

then in most cases that would be kanji/hiragana. the issue is, when fansubs happen, different groups spell in different ways - there's no way to know a 'right' name unless the R2 (ie, japanese DVD) release happens, and even then it's a guess.

there is no definitive way to have an 'original' title.
