Creating custom usergroups...
 

eventually we plan on having these on the site, but for now, i figured i'd let people start joining them in the forum. this means that eventually, i can probably just pull the info over into the site and have those usergroups set up already.

i can't find a way for you guys to be able to create them automatically, so for now, looks like i'll have to create them. honestly i don't know how awesome/not awesome this will be, so we'll just have to see.

if you want me to create a usergroup that others can join let me know the title. i THINK i can set up a moderator for each group who would then confirm/deny requests, assuming you want it to be a semi closed group. if it's a public group, anyone can join.

i think this will show up in your profile and i'm not sure where else, so i'll just have to create one to see. :)

please choose topics that you know people would join, and try to keep it to a minimum per anime... for example, 5 groups on evangelion would be annoying :p

You dont know how long I've been waiting for this. I've been psyched just thinking about it, but now that it's here, I'm so happy XD

Well here's the first request: I'd like an Evangelion group, public, with the name "Evangelion Fanatics" or some such. XD

a bit more info now:

i cant find where else this could be listed easily (if anyone can research vbulletin for me that would be great), but so far it looks like you can now join usergroups in your User CP by clicking "group memberships" down on the left. here's a direct link:

i need to set a leader or leaders for each group - youll need to check the "group m emberships" page to see pending requests. even though they are public groups, join requests must be approved. it's not built in to get a PM when someone tries to join, but ill try to figure out a way to add that later.

if you want a group created, come up with a short group description and say who should be the leaders ^_^

PS: There is a mod for PHPBB to allow users to create usergroups themselves. It works great with the RPG and cash mods (making people buy the ability to make their group/Guild). I've looked around a little, but couldn't find one for vBulletin. It's actually kinda surprising.

well all those groups are now created :)

i think there used to be a "usergroups" link in the top nav bar, and i removed it long ago because we didnt use them... ill try to figure out what code to put back in there tonight so theres an easy link

Not particularly considering vBulletin is commercial software. Having to buy it in order to make customizations kinda kills the sort of extension community some open source projects have.

True. Then again the modifications that do exist are probably of better quality and easier to install. PHPBB mods were always a pain to install. They almost always conflicted somehow, and had to be added by painstakingly inserting a million lines of code in a million different places.

Murphy's Law always seems to haunt me when it comes to any sort of coding. :@_@:

Group Name: Alt-Fiction Association (AFA)

Purpose: An informal group for writers seriously aspiring to publish in the fantasy, sci-fi, or horror genre. It'll just be a place to exchange ideas, talk about the stuff we read, and ask for feedback on written work. My emphasis would be on giving quality/informative feedback (although giving feedback is completely voluntary) and interesting debates on controversial issues or books we've read. Writing is by definition a lonely/isolating job, hence it's nice to have somewhere to go to get some encouragement.

well can we do issup? marmar and i as leaders. and we can have it private so it will be locked away in a dark corner =P (will still obey rules though ^.^) it will be about that other side of anime that everyone has but keeps locked away and all that. so we can both be in charge on the same level right? or would it be me as a mod and him a admin kinda thing?
