I think AP should have an official Top 10 anime. This will be determined by an automatic system, where the anime that most frequently make it into People's Top 5 are listed. So let's say out of ten people, Ninja Scroll came up in six Top 5s, Heibane Renmei in five, Haruhi Suzumiya in four, etc, the list would be as follows.
First place: Ninja Scroll Second place: Heibane Renmei Third place: Haruhi Suzumiya etc As this would be automated, the list might change over time (depending on new anime released, change of AP demographic etc). I think it would just be an interesting way to rate anime, and it wouldn't be based on average ratings, but people's genuine personal tastes. I argue Top 10 instead of Top 5 because this gives more scope for change in tastes to apply to the official list, and it also gives us more anime to look at. Heck, why not a Top 20? We might find some surprise entries - or we might not. Lol. Also, people can click on the anime and find the names listed of all those who put it as their Top 5. Add that extra 'community' factor to it?

I have a hard time to decide wether I like it or not. It would be interesting to see what anime is popular and what people like et cetera, but at the same time it would add to the promotion of the most popular series. Conformism is not something I like.
What would it mean for those of us who do not use our toplists as "this is my favourite anime ever!" but for example as I do "these anime come from what I percieve as a theme and are the best among it, not neccecarily the best anime out there, but still worth watching" or as others " I have seen way too many anime to do this, but I think these genres/types are the most enjoyable and these anime are the best among each genre" ? We would both throw off the results and feel pressure to conform. It is an interesting idea, really. And it could add to the community feeling, but I fear it would also take away from the same feeling =/ |

If you chose an anime because you thought it was the best of it's genre - like a friend of mine had to do because he had that dilemma you describe - then it still wouldn't necessarily invalidate the actual outcome. It would still reflect the top favourited anime.
And yes, it would promote the most popular series, but I'm curious as to know what they are exactly. I think the top ones might be obvious (I can guess FMA will be in there, probably Naruto >_<) but the ones lower down, if you have a longer list e.g. a Top 20 might have real surprises. Seriously, if you're a non-conformist who likes things more on the fringes, would you really feel pressure to conform just because a list says these are the anime that are favourited the most? I think it helps newer viewers of anime launch straight into what lots of people thought were brilliant, whilst older viewers hopefully are confident enough in their tastes to disregard such information. I do take your point, though, that it promotes the most popular shows and agree that's an issue (although not an issue related to community spirit per se). Whether the list will detract significantly from the quality of the site... well, I don't know... something about that is irking me now you mention it. If there was a way to add an element of quality to that as well, maybe each entry comes with several reviews (both positive and negative)? Or maybe, each entry in the list shares its spot with its top three other recommended anime?

I think it'd be interesting to see what the list is, but as said having it posted on the site may be detrimental. Not just from a low-quality perspective, but also I imagine that newer/casual visitors will probably use the top 10 list to decide what to watch rather than trying out the anirec or reading reviews, which would obviously be much more preferable...
Perhaps we could post it somewhere where only registered users (who are theoretically already aware of the anirec, etc.) can see it to avoid this? |

I suppose it would depend on the type of traffic this site and forum gets. Places like Anime-Eden, for example, get a lot of people who are quite young, completely dependent on ddl/youtube/broadcast for their anime and don't know how to play mkvs. In that crowd you tend to get people who have, other than Berserk or Eva, never seen anime pre-2000 and tend to, for lack of a better word, have 'immature' tastes.
Also, if you don't implement a solid algorithm and just go with raw scores, basically you're going to end up with a lot of shows ending up at the top based on the number of watchers as opposed to 'quality.' And lastly, I agree with longer lists. When a friend bitched at me to make a top list so he could see what was good in my catalog, I ended up doing a top 30 because it was hard to leave some solid titles out of a top 10 (my catalog is ~400 series [shows like all the CotS count as 1] and I've seen probably almost twice that amount). Even at 30 it was hard, but it gave me enough playing space that I didn't feel quite as bad as with 10. Then again, I don't think I'll be involved in this cuz there's no way in hell I'm going to spend the time to list all of my animes on AP's database. Hell, just remembering all the watched ones not in my catalog would be a nightmare.

Well it is a good idea for me since i tend to just check out series that get high ratings and disregard the genres (except for stuff like Bleach and Full Moon). If you've seen a lot of series it becomes quite hard to use the rec database because you've seen the recs themselves tbh.
If there are some titles in a top 20 that i haven't seen yet i'd definitely pick them up out of curiosity. So it does offer a good alternative. Most of all i'm interested in seeing how different (more adult?) the A-P community is from AniDB, and ANN though. |

if this is still based on popularity, i don't think i'll ever implement it. things lik ethis are always skewed by popularity and i think they are almost never reliable on any site.
