Default [REQUEST] Highly Recommended Anime

One feature that would really help is a list of all anime that have been recommended for anime you've watched, sorted by the number of times the anime is recommended by other anime, and then by the total number of recommendations for that anime.

Often I find myself browsing through the anirec trying to find new recommended anime only to encounter the same ones repeatedly. Instead of opening each watched anime in a tab trying to look for unique recommended anime, it would be far more efficient in terms of time and bandwidth savings to have a title list of recommended anime.

For example, given:

Quote:
Anime A
=> Anime B (3 recommendations)
=> Anime C (2 recommendations)

Anime D
=> Anime B (1 recommendation)
=> Anime C (3 recommendations)
=> Anime E (2 recommendations)

This would generate a list (assuming you've watched Anime A and D):

Quote:
[Anime C] (2 Recommending Anime, 5 Recommendations)
[Anime B] (2 Recommending Anime, 4 Recommendations)
[Anime E] (1 Recommending Anime, 2 Recommendations)

where the titles link to the anirec entries, much in the same fashion as the alphabetical list, with the bit in parenthesis optional, but sorted as such. (I can help with the SQL if necessary -- shouldn't be much more than COUNT(*) and perhaps a subquery or two).

This would provide quick and easy access to the anirec entries for all recommended anime for what you've watched (eg from a link in the Login section), and if you could filter out what you've watched it would be even better.

Note: This was very briefly alluded to in my (rather old) first post.

UPDATE

Post #5 (in this thread)
  • Clarification of "if you could filter out what you've watched"
  • An alternate implementation with anirec style entries

Assuming I'm understanding your example correctly, doesn't that mean you're just getting one big list but with no idea what they're being recommended from? I'm just wondering how helpful that would be to someone who watches a wide variety of anime - when I look for something in the anirec, I'm usually looking for whatever type I'm currently in the mood (based off an anime I've seen that fit that mood). If you aggregated all the anime together, I'm not sure the results would be as helpful...
Not that I assume my opinion is necessarily speaking for the majority in any way :p That was just my first reaction thought.

I don't know if that's such a good idea to hide recommendations for anime you have watched... or maybe I dont understand what you mean *lol*

It's already possible to filter and hide anime you've seen in the current anirec setting - I'm assuming you just meant you want that feature applied to your proposed list as well...?

To be honest, I'd prefer anirec style entries instead of a title list. This could be done as:

Quote:
2 Recommending Anime, 5 Recommendations (akin to "n people think you'd like")

[Anime C]

[main screenshot] [Description]

[...]

The recommendations ajax page could be presented either as a mere list of all the recommendations from each recommending anime (differentiating source anime by recommendation content, eg: "You'd like A because it's similar to B"), or take that a bit further and differentiate them explicitly by recommending anime with links to the respective anirec entries:

Quote:
[Anime A]

First Recommendation.

Second Recommendation.

[Anime D]

First Recommendation.

Second Recommendation.

Third Recommendation.

Where the recommending anime titles link to the anirec entries. I think this would be the better of the two options. The recommending anime titles (eg "[Anime A]" above) could also be presented in a manner similar to "n people think you'd like", eg:

"n people who watched [Anime A] think you'd like" or
"[Anime A] (n Recommendations)" or
"Recommendations from [Anime A]" or
"n Recommendations from [Anime A]" or
"Recommendations from people who watched [Anime A]" or
"n Recommendations from people who watched [Anime A]"

So, I think it is possible to address your concerns, and I'd prefer the feature with anirec style entires, because even with a title list I'd likely open many in tabs just to get at the anirec entries (with the screenshots, descriptions, recommendations, anidb links, etc).

However, as this would require a bit more effort than a mere title list I think it's best to get it up as a title list first, and then enhance it later once this much is working. There is also a bandwidth consideration. The full title list shouldn't be much problem; however anirec style entries for all recommended anime would take a bit time to generate / download / display in browser. Anirec style entries would be more useful, but perhaps we'd need a 20/page breakdown or something.

Yes. Since the list would be derived from the anime you've already seen, I'd like to use it to find anime I haven't seen. Still, there may be uses to including anime you have seen, similar to why they watched recommendations appear on the anirec page. Making this optional here would provide a consistent interface.
