I feel like a lot of users don't notice the 'rec both ways' checkbox, or don't know what it does, or something, because I've come across oodles of one-way recs that are written as if they were two-way. This is especially noticeable in the manga db, 'cause there's way less recs.
Is there any way to make 'rec both ways' the default, so it's less likely to get overlooked? |

I agree that rec both ways should be on by default. Most people rarely/if ever make one way recs. In fact, doing so is quite counter-intuitive. If you're saying that series A is similar to series B, then it is also true that series B is similar to series A.

the main reason i force people to click the box is that they are more likely to understand the reason has to work both ways - a HUGE amount of people still make the rec one-way but click the box. making it clicked by default means the amount i have to flag will exponentially increase and the quality won't necessarily
most recs are written as two way, but users dont see the HUGE amount that i flag because they're written as one-way but are marked two way :/

I figured your response would be something along those lines. (I think we discussed this once before, a couple years ago or something.)

one thing i need to fix is put the little hover/question mark icon next to the 'recommend both ways' text - we designed it into the design but i just havent gotten around to fixing it. the idea being people can easily hover over the little image to read a sentence or two about what it means to recommend both ways

You could apply a tooltip to the submit button. If the both ways box is checked, then hovering over the submit button would get a tooltip along the lines of "does your reason work for both series?", and if it isn't checked, the tooltip would be something like "did you want to apply it both ways?"
Before anyone chimes in with a misunderstanding, I'm not talking about some annoying popup when you click the submit button, that you'd have to close before submitting, just a tooltip when you hover over the submit button.
