AVG free is a good one to have for passive protection and such, and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is pretty good at scanning/removing baddies.

If you reset the computer to factory settings, get first all the important softwares you need - starting with bringing the system up-to-date to firewall and antivirus and other stuff you need:

Offline-Update can be good 1.5+ GB - You should have at least two partitions, on C you can throw your OS, on D, the Update packages.

As Antivirus, which is free for personal use you can try Avira Antivir. As Firewall for ex. Sunbelt Personal - formally known as Kerio. However keep in mind that software firewalls mostly suck.

And last, edit your hosts file to redirect bad urls to nowhere.

If you use firefox I use the Web of Trust add-on. It gives little icons signifying the safety of a website. if it's potentially unsafe the site is blocked with a warning.

Kaspersky is good. I've used it. Atm I have McAfee since it came pre-installed on my laptop and all I had to do was renew the key when it expired.

Else I've heard good things about Avast.
Used F-secure 2007 when it was the hot thing. And it is indeed very strict. Though we had so much troubles with it we replaced it with Kaspersky.

Btw as a word of warning total security 2009 is a horible virus i can't seem to get rid of it and its going through my computer telling me all my files and system 32 stuff is infected when it clearly isn't i seem to be able to stall it from finishing its scan and deleting all the files

I've had that virus as well before. Its a scareware program. And downloads trojans. I was using CA at the time. Im currently using Avira AntiVir (free) as a crutch for now until I get enuff mulah to purchase one.

And never get McAfee, Norton, or AVG.

Ketsuron makes a good point about partitioning your HD and leaving just a small section for you OS to run off of.

I would recommend Zone Alarm Extreme Security. as for that particular nasty ware, you can get the removal tool or remove it yourself, it is only 3 files that cause it. Oddly the particular ware is commonly found in social sites now days, you tube, ware sites, and lime-wire.
It doesn't matter which Internet browser you use.
