Default External Hard Drive Help

I plugged in my external hard drive today and it says that it needs to be formated and that there is nothing on it, thats 300GB of anime, 3 Seasons of House, lots of pics and uni work backups gone, is there anyway of retrieving this or anything ?

i have one that the comp sees..then doesn't see....i'd just try unplugging it and the plug it in before turning on the comp

If you already formatted it there are some programs that can restore the files. If you haven't I would try the hard drive on another computer.

Hasn't been formated yet, but it dosn't work on my laptop, home pc or xbox :(

You should probably check the manufacturer's site some of them have diagnostic tools for stuff like this.(or at least western digital does)

its so weird the computer registers it been there but thinkis its empty and needs to be formated

see if someone else's comp will see the files or maybe defrag it....have you tried dinking around with the tools in the device manager....
