Default >_< problem with my hd or OS

ok, this is my problem. when i use crtl or shift to select files on my computer it sometimes gets the fallowing error "explorer has generated an error and will be closed by windows." this also hapens when i try to move files to folders by draging and droping it.

at first this only happend on my old hard drive, but then moved to my new one as well, and has become more frequent.

im using windows 2000 pro, and yes i defrag my drive when it needs it.

im also wondering could this be due to bad sectors?

well defragging has nothing to do with that, and I dont think it's bad sectors. How long has it been since you've wiped your system, and how hard to you treat it? It sounds like something that simply reinstalling windows will fix.

um.. wipe system? ... i havent heard that term before, so i might not have done that. but i really want to avoid renistaling windows, because alot of the programs i have instaled are hacks that i lost the cracks for or originals that the cd keys are gone.

also my mom uses this computer, and she would be pissed if i did that.

wipe meaning reformat the system drive and reinstall the OS. If you're really having OS problems it's the only real solution. I, for one, don't know how to manually repair IE, and I have a feeling it's really not worth it anyway. Just back up all of your data to another drive or to cds or something and reformat your system drive. To find cracks you've lost just look thru cracks.am they should have like 90% of anything you'll need, then make sure you save them all this time.

I don't know what to say really other than that, hopefully some one else will have had that particular problem and know what to do about it.

Actually since you brought it up, you say your mom uses the computer? Does she have her own login and does she have the same selection problems that you have under yours? If not then you can probably get around it by deleting just your user account and creating a new one.

you can boot to win2k cd and run a repair install I believe.. though that might uninstall a few programs. EXPLORER is the program that runs start bar and surfing files etc.. IEXPLORE is internet explorer.. so if you got explorer it's a bit more of a pain to fix.. too bad you don't have any restoration options! at least with the holey XP you can undo things with system restore.. also might want to try virus scan and ad-aware scan..

IE and Explorer are so tightly integrated you can hardly tell the difference. Back when I used to use IE as my primary browser it usually ran under explorer threads anyway.

The recovery console is basically a dos prompt with mostly disk repair functions. I've honestly never gotten an automatic repair of windows to work either, but in any case I belive that those are mostly to fix installs that won't boot anymore, it wont do anything about explorer, because that gets changed when you apply service packs and the like, the original cd becomes useless for system files after you start applying patches.

The only other option your left with (other than formatting clean) is to install on top of the copy of windows that is already there, and that accomplishes the same thing as formatting the drive except that you still get all the old crap from the original windows install left in the drive as well.

A restore is only as good as how sudden the problem occured. If you only just noticed it happening, or it had been happening for a while and hadn't bothered you the restore point that might fix it would be soo far back in history that it would be just as useless as reformatting the drive. It really isn't an issue anyway if you take care of windows properly. I've never used windows restores because I've always run 2k, and I've got it disabled on my 2k3 box.

more people need to start installing nothing but windows on 2-4gb partitions and stop storing other things on that partition. then just keep all of your drivers you need in a folder on another drive, and if anything happens you can format, reinstall, and be running again within 3 hours tops and not end up losing any data or whatever else in the process.

ive been doing scans with mcafee V-scan about once a week or so, i know it isnt a virus or adware (new virus scan also looks for ad ware like ad-aware)

and my OS is instaled on a 10 gig partition with nothing else instaled on it, but theres the problem of the mom thing, she would lose some settings if i do that, id also have to back up favorites onto another drive, then hunt around for all the files she has randomly saved on C drive. ... though i made a specific drive for her to use, but for some reason its just too hard for her to save it there....
