heh, there's an easy solution to that ISK and here is how you do it. Backup all the files you can find, or just make a copy of all the files on the drive if you want, then just get mysteriously hit by a "hacker" or a "super worm" :shifty eyes: or something like that that wipes out the OS and forces you to reinstall it. Then what you have to do is once you've got windows reinstalled and stuff you have to create different user logins for everyone who uses the computer, make your mom one and let it be just a normal user account, not a power user or administrator. Then the only place she'll be allowed to save data is the my doccuments folder (Which is where I reccomend you use anyway) and her desktop. Then all you've got to do to make sure all her stuff is backed up is backup the Documents and Settings folder on the system drive and you'e got it all.

yea, that is another option. altho even regular user accounts can still manage to screw things up. it's just less likely.
and i agree with the "ono, we got hax0red by teh melissah virus!" approach. im sure you'll probably hear at least some bitching, but it's an excuse to wipe it and start everything over from scratch which saves you quite a few headaches.

regular user accounts can screw stuff up, but its much harder. The big benifit is it'll help her "remember" to save stuff in the right directory because it'll give her an error everytime she saves it somewhere else
Quote:
"we got Hax0red by teh worm which installed a virus, but the disk accidentally corrupted it before it could delete all the data, which is why I was able to backup almost all the files before reformatting" If you're really desperate you can always back stuff up, then install a real virus yourself, let it wipe out the drive while your mom is working on it, then you look the hero for being able to recover all the data that you were.

really great ideas, but i hit a snag, ... kinda... i ran into a problem witha virus about 6 months ago and my dad blamed it on my downloading, since that leaves an open port for a hacker to go through, or some how i downloaded a virus through bittorrent.also my mom is the one that kinda forced us all to go to the auto startup to the main account.. shes a power freak.. doenst know what she is doing alot of the time, but she insists that she needs all the resources she can get, and that she doesnt like to login, she wanted it to auto boot. ... but im gonna make up some bs when i get a new motherboard with new proccesor... .. maybe something that it "requires" a login... and wont let an auto login...

It's simple, just tell her that having her own loging means that windows will only load the applications that she has on her desktop, and not all the extra garbage that you've got on yours, so having her own login will free up even more resources for her.
Let them know that you can't download a worm, that they're autonomous and they travel around the net actively working their way into computers with no user intervention (which is true) Gah, people who don't understand technology but insist on being in charge just really rub me the wrong way. Ahhhh! open ports for hackers caused by downloading stuff *smacks forhead* Sorry, it's just a total peve of mine.

dude, when YOU get a new mainboard and processor, get a new case, videocard, ram, and hd too. save up the cash for longer if you have to, but get your own computer.

Hoooold it... Are you currently using win2k without a password on the main login? If you do, you'\re just asking to be ****ed with, as both win2k an winxp cores don't care where the person with admin login/password operate from, your keyboard or ip in another country. And you can aquire all logins on the machine with a simple command.

yeah, it still requires a password to login to windows, it just logs in at startup.
i think i would do that.. but she only uses word, excel... and outlook, and she hates loging in ... oh yeah, i cant get a new pc because i have no job. the new board my dads getting so he he wont have to buy another pc, and when you get a new board you usually get new ram and prossesor which he is, as for new vid cards and sound cards... i dont think he will... but when i get a job im going to get a good vid card just to play HL2.. half-life and its modes are the only games i dont get tired of in a day.
