Default Converting .MKV, .MP4 to .AVI Help

I downloaded MeGui Media Converter the other day, but I'm not exactly sure what settings work best for converting anime video files. If anyone has links to a guide/walkthrough or has any tips on what setting to use, I'd appreciate.

This might be of use to you
It explains how to convert the contents of a dvd to an h.264 video file, but you should be able to figure out how to use it in general from this.
MeGUI H.264 Conversion Guide | Articles - Digital Digest
If you want to convert it to a Xvid Avi file then I would recomend using the "Xvid: 2pass HQ" encoder setting.
If the original file is an MKV then you might need to do a few extra steps to hardsub the subtitles from the MKV into the new video file so you cab have subtitles. If this is the case then I can explain it more in detail.

There's a similar thread in the FAQs section: Video Conversion AVI/MKV/MP4 to DVD (Free)

Handbrake, though I'm not sure how the Windows UI is. The OS X one is excellent :)
